Rose Tyler Who Spinoff Canned

August 22, 2006 By Sam Sloan 7 Comments

Rosetyler.jpgAmid the news of Stagate SG1’s non-renewal for Season 11 is a story that has almost gotten buried with all the press going to the gate show.

The BBC is reporting that it has squelched plans for a Doctor Who spinoff that would feature Billie Piper as Rose Tyler.

“It was actually commissioned by the controller of BBC One and budgeted,” series creator Russell T Davies told Doctor Who magazine. Davies, however, has decided that the show, Rose Tyler: Earth Defence, was “a spinoff too far” and has slashed it from his mind.

That other spinoff series, “Torchwood,” which stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, has had its own share of production problems and delays but still has the green light for this autumn on BBC Three.

I would have been surprised if Billie Piper really wanted to continue as Rose in a spin off show. From what I could tell, she wanted to move on after Doctor Who and do a different role.

Thank heaven for that. Mind you now I have to worry about what she is going to spoil next. Maybe the gurning little mockney will do us all a favour and fade into obscurity.

Torchwood on the other hand could be very interesting!

When I saw this article, I thought it was a joke.

    But, it’s not April Fools.

Personally I think they should bring back Christopher Eccleston….He was much better than David Tennant. And I agree, Rose is annoying.

What? I *loved* Rose. By halfway through the first season she’d already become one of my favorite companions. Mind you, not being British, if her Cockney occasionally went a little south I wouldn’t notice. (Whereas when Nicola Bryant’s American accent slipped, I found it terrifyingly obvious — that’s “glass,” dear, not “glahss.”)

The spin-off idea could have taken off into some really great directions. The best thing about Doctor Who is that he affects so many lives. For example, Martha leaves the Doctor and eventually begins to work for UNIT. Wouldn’t that have been amazing to have clips of her life working in UNIT, we have Torchwood, which should continue and SOON!. And Rose is in a PARALLEL UNIVERSE! Do we not see the amount of opportunities there?! There’s all this stuff with her and Mickey, the clone Doctor! The Cybermen! So many untapped opportunities! Or even Amy and Rory. During their time with the Eleventh Doctor, they would spend months living in “NORMAL LIVES” then go back to see the Doctor. That on it’s own would be an entertaining series of mini-episodes. Just seeing how they really cope with a bland regular life. And what about River! Her Timeline with the Doctor was jumpy! And she matured a lot throughout the years! What kind of Adventures did she go on ? With and without Mr. Doctor. We could have overlaps in the different spin-offs and it could truly be something great! Honestly ! Because the Doctor Travels throughout time and space, there are always clues, unanswered questions! The Doctor represents Science for Humanity. No matter how much we explore science, no matter how many questions we answer, there will always be questions left unanswered and that is the definition of Doctor Who! The enigma of unanswerable questions! The Doctor is a mystery and he always will be, because he is so vast and so out there! He ripples off people and changes there lives forever! The Doctor could be an everlasting story! With the right kind of creativity it could be brought to all sorts of different levels!
