4K Review: “Dogma” 25th Anniversary Special Edition brings a lost classic home again

4K Review: “Dogma” 25th Anniversary Special Edition brings a lost classic home again

December 16, 2025 By Summer Brooks 1 Comment

Dogma has long been established as a comedy that succeeds despite many of the story (and Hollywood) norms it gleefully broke. What made it even more of a cult classic was the fact that because of it’s controversial approach to certain religious topics and viewpoints, and various rights-related power plays involving Miramax and the Weinstein brothers. Once those initial DVD and Blu-ray distribution deals expired, the movie went out of print and became an highly sought-after collectible on the secondary market.

So Dogma was still unavailable on home video and on streaming when, in 2024 and 2025, reports came out that Kevin Smith was working on a restoration anniversary release of the movie, with Lionsgate getting it on track for a new anniversary theatrical release and a screening tour presented by Smith, followed by this long-awaited home video release.

ScreenRant: Kevin Smith’s Long Out Of Print Movie Will Finally Be Getting New Physical & Theatrical Releases

That the original special features are included on this release in addition to a series of new features celebrating the return of this movie to physical media and honoring the 25th anniversary make this a special release for me.

The new features, especially “Revelations: Making Dogma” are examples of how dearly Kevin Smith also loves physical media and the appreciation movie lovers have for additional behind-the-scenes footage and as many insights and commentaries as could fit on a disc. The legacy deleted scenes are on the blu-ray disc, with intros. There is mention in the Making Of feature why these scenes were not edited back into the main feature, but are rather included as added content.

There only seems to be one difference between the standard 4K release and the Limited Edition Steelbook; the booklet “25th-anniversary Dogma: Revelations of the Easily Offended” which also includes another special message from Kevin Smith.

The feature itself is lovely to watch, the colors and picture sharpness looking good on large screens without being distracting from enjoyment of the movie. The audio is clear, but my sound system is not one to take full advantage of the listed immersive multi-dimensional audio… I am curious what that would sound like on a full sound system.

If you’re one of the Dogma fans who have been waiting over 15 years for this movie to be readily available on physical media again, you will not be disappointed with this set. Let’s thank Lionsgate for teaming with Kevin Smith to make this restoration and release possible, and hope that it stays in print long enough for everyone who wants a copy to grab it!

Kevin Smith’s Dogma, presented in immaculate 4K for the first time, focuses on angels Bartleby (Ben Affleck) and Loki (Matt Damon) — tossed out of Heaven, exiled to Wisconsin, and pilgrimaging to a cardinal’s (George Carlin) “Buddy Christ” New Jersey church. The crafty angels plan to exploit a divine loophole once they arrive that will facilitate their heavenly return. But their gambit’s success has a downside: the end of God…and the universe! Aiding and bedeviling Bartleby and Loki are Salma Hayek as Serendipity, the stripper muse; Chris Rock as Rufus, the 13th apostle; Alan Rickman as the seraph Metatron; Jay and Silent Bob (Smith, Jason Mewes) as irreverent prophets; and Alanis Morissette as God herself.

The best the movie has looked. It’s dialogue heavy so the Atmos track is rarely used. When it comes in for the few action scenes, it’s impressive.
