So a show where some guy passing through a small town with his daughter, a town filled with strange beings and hi-tech gadgets, gets appointed sheriff of that town. Hmmm it all seems so familiar. Let me think…where have I seen this before…hmmmm….hmmm (thinking deeply)….Eureka!!! I have It!!!

For me it was more “meh”, than interesting. Sorry, it’s hard to speak my mind without spoilers so,SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS…you’ve been warned.
The whole ending of the episode where the hero takes his reward and leaves, only to come back felt ripped off from Star Wars. His daughter coming back to help was waaaaay to predictable as well. It just didn’t wow me in anyway, except for maybe the mech fighters, they were kind of cool. It has potential, but I don’t feel the writing for the pilot episode was all that good. We’ll see where it goes from there, but the generic “co-conspiring against mankind” plot is getting kind of redundant.

I have to agree with Greg to a point on this…it did remind me of Eureka and at one point a little bit of Firefly with the whole madam/hero hookup thing but that’s where the similarities ended. After that it seemed pretty original. I hadn’t even been looking forward to seeing it…just turned to it because I remembered at the last minute it was on and found myself continuing to watch. Certainly better than a lot of programs on SyFy… I will continue to watch.

The whole madam/hero thing well predates Firefly, there is a lot of madam or saloon owning woman/hero going on in the old Westerns.

There really isn’t anything new under the sun after all.

lol I could have used Gunsmoke as the example but I didn’t think anyone would remember it. I said Firefly because something about the girl playing the part reminded me of Morena Baccarin. And no I couldn’t say what exactly reminded me of her.

I didn’t hate it. That’s the best I can say at the moment. The main characters of Nolan and his daughter were compelling even if they were a trope. It seems more thought went into those two than any others except maybe the Lady Macbeth alien. It was like Terra Nova but instead of your main character being a convicted over-breeder this guy actually adopts.

On the really disappointing side. The aliens were just not alien at all. I’m not talking about makeup, I was fine with that; they just all acted like humans. The only bit of alien-ness I noticed was when the doctor was explaining to this guy how his son died and it was like she was explain how his car broke down, no sensitivity to grief. I hope they create some real cultural differences. I kind of liked the twist at the end too. I will watch the next one and hope it gets it’s footing.

Glad to hear some positive on it, my week has yet to give me time when the kids aren’t around to sit down for a two hour show.

Hopefully I’ll be able to watch the first part before the next one comes out 🙂

I’m kind of ambivalent about the whole show..I will probably watch the next few and give it a bit of time for this show to get its feet under it I DID however see the “twist” coming..gee who would have thunk it?, The old “mayor” is a “bad guy”?? Haven’t decided if i wan tot play the game either, too many other better games out there right now.

It was okay. But the days of okay being good enough are long gone. We won’t bother checking on it again.

They tried to cram too much into two hours and by doing so, really didn’t develop much of a show. As has already been said in previous posts here, I saw way too much of too many other shows for it to be their own. Star Wars, Eureka, 7 Samurai, there just wasn’t anything original to make me feel like I wasn’t watching a rerun of something else. It was OK as far as being something SciFi to watch to take up my evening entertainment when nothing else was on. I’m definitely going to give it at least a few more shows before I make a final decision. I just don’t know yet. I think it has great potential and the actor cast has the talent. It’s just going to come down to the writers.

It was alright in my book. Not fantastic, but good. It did everything a 2hr pilot is basically suppose to do. It opened with a very brief intro about why things on Earth are the way the are then revealed the protagonist very quickly and our introduction to all the key players in the town of Defiance as witnessed through his eyes & those of his adopted alien daughter. Then we get a look at the problems facing Defiance & the friction between some of its key & ranking players & finally the big battle scene with transformer looking baddies. Very little back story or lengthy description of all the various alien races now on Earth but have no doubt that will be dealt with in future episodes. I see this becoming more of a character driven show with just enough bits of sci-fi action thrown in to keep the weaker minded thrill seekers entertained…yeah, I know, I’m one of those guys who preferred DS9 over TNG – much prefer good characters & storytelling over bang bang go the phasers. I’m going to give this one a chance over the next few weeks because it is likely that if the writers do it right it will take that amount of time to grip an audience. The best shows are always done that way – Seinfeld & Firefly anyone? (Oh yeah – Fox didn’t give Firefly that time needed to catch on) – but then again, like Seinfeld, Firefly did cater to the more intellectually astute in the viewing audience.

Meh. I hope the stories and the writing get better. At times it seemed like the show was more interested in how much Cosplay they’ll get in future Done than in building a great series. I’ll give it a chance and seer if it improves. Right now it is a bit juvenile still.

OK then. Several episodes have been televised. I originally saw this show as having good potential for being great along the lines of BSG, especially since some of the creative team behind that show are spearheading this one…however, I am becoming sorely disappointed. This week’s episode was so damn boring & predictable that halfway through I simply turned it off. If it doesn’t pick up on that potential I originally expected it will soon be gone from my DVR queue forever.

I got past the pilot and the first episode and then completely lost interest and yes It became boring really fast.
