Kirkman Says TV Show Shouldn’t Follow Comic Book In Certain Developments

Kirkman Says TV Show Shouldn’t Follow Comic Book In Certain Developments

July 27, 2011 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

Producer Robert Kirkman says that fans of the comic book series The Walking Dead can look forward to a lot of events unfolding just as they do on the printed page, but also to some changes.

One of them that he doesn’t want to include in the TV series is a bit of a SPOILER for those of you catching up on the comics.  If you don’t want to know, stop reading now.

Kirkman says that while Rick loses his hand in the comic books, he’s not sure he wants to follow that plot thread in the TV series.

“When I’m writing a comic book, I don’t think about what I’m doing. I go, ‘Oh, it’d be pretty cool if they cut his hand off right now. That’d be pretty shocking, right?’. Then I do it, and five issues later, I write ‘Rick opens a can of beans’ and then I look at the script and think ‘He can’t do that now’. I didn’t even think that through,” he says.

Despite the proposed change, Kirkman added that there are “very few things” he regrets about the Walking Dead comic.

“One of the things that’s great about the television show is [it features] a lot of characters I miss,” he said. “I don’t regret killing them, because I recognize its value to story, but to be able to come back and write them again… has been awesome.”
