“Star Wars” Series Hasn’t Begun Filming Yet

“Star Wars” Series Hasn’t Begun Filming Yet

June 1, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 8 Comments

Last week, it was reported that George Lucas has already filmed 50 hours of a new Star Wars live action series.

A spokesman for the director says that isn’t true.

“[George is] waiting for a different type of technology we can use so it’s economically feasible to shoot the shows,” says a spokesperson for LucasFilm.

Lucas has said he’s got scripts ready but it waiting for the technology to create the series to be more affordable.

By the time this technology becomes more affordable, will a Star Wars live action series still be relevant? Will anyone still care for it?

It’s Star Wars. The base always cares.

My theory is that he wants cinematic special effects on a weekly basis and someone with enough common sense told him that is virtually impossible on a budget. Basically, George Lucas is desperately searching for a way to make his show pretty instead of having some depth.

When will he learn that putting an actor in a blue room and adding a million CGI effects is NOT what made Star Wars great.

Battlestar Galctica had great effects each week. SGU and SG Atlantis had as well. And all had great stories. What more would Lucas need…?

Chris, I agree that those shows had amazing visuals on a regular basis but in the end, it was the characters that we remember. For instance, when I think about SGA, I think of Joe Flannigan and not a Wraith ship.

Jayson, which is ecactly why I don’t understand Lucas’ reluctance to start filming right now. He is capable of creating a show with both great characters and visuals at this moment in time. There’s no need for him to wait for some cinematic breakthrough. He could do it on a modern TV series budget, seeing how BSG and SGU incorporated both characters and visuals. What more is he waiting for, exactly…? We don’t need better visuals than those we’ve already seen in previous shows. Do we…? I don’t…

This sort of reporting doesn’t surprise me one bit.

Years ago I *read* an actual interview with George Lucas (back in the early 90’s) that he had all three scripts written and virtually finalized for the ST: 1 – 3, and also had rough outlines for the episode 7 – 9! Then years later he claims that there never was going to be episodes 7 – 9…

I’ve been forced by this take anything he says with a HUGE grain of salt until I see it on the screen…
