“Phantom Menance” in 3-D Opening Date Set

March 4, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 10 Comments

Can’t wait to see Jar Jar in 3-D?

You’ll be happy next February. That’s when “Star Wars: Episode I–The Phantom Menance” will hit theaters.

LucasFilm announced the 3-D version of the movie will hit theaters February 10, 2012.

Here’s more details from the press release.

Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox announced today that the 3D theatrical launch of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace now has an official release date — February 10, 2012! Set against the thrilling and exotic backdrop of a “galaxy far, far away,” Star Wars is perfectly suited to the immersive 3D theatrical experience, and Episode I delivers some of the Saga’s most stunning and spectacular sequences — from the Naboo invasion to the Tatooine Podraces to the climactic lightsaber battle between Darth Maul and the Jedi. Supervised by Industrial Light & Magic, the meticulous conversion is being done with utmost respect for the source material, and with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions.

Of course, no word yet on when the films most “Star Wars” fans want to see in 3-D will hit theaters–namely “A New Hope” and “Empire Strikes Back.”

Not interested in seeing the same thing processed yet again into a format that is questionable at best. Hey George, if you want to get more of my money put out some NEW content.

I read somewhere (Gizmodo?) that it would be one per year. So 2015 for New Hope and 2016 for Empire.

    Just one question – Why?

      To Mitch from Omaha.

You ask why. Because George Lucas ran out of ideas years ago so he is going to milk his Star Wars cash cow for all its worth.

In ten years time if 3D has faded away and some new visual technology is being touted as the next big thing we can’t live without, I will expect the Star Wars franchise to be converted into that new format as well.

After Bond, Star Trek, (and the tv side of it) Sherlock, BSG and Doctor showed that beloved icons can be continued with success — why no more original Star Wars movies? And I don’t mean pre-prequels or anything like that. There are a zillion stories out there and good directors and writers and actors available. Money isn’t an issue it doesn’t seem and there is an audience for it.

Instead we were given prequels to movies that worked fine without the boring first three parts spelled out and an endless parade of repackaged material that gets worse each time. Is this where anyone expected Star Wars to be in 2011?

That should have read “Doctor Who”, though we are on a first name basis these days. 🙂

I love Star Wars and enjoyed the prequels. I think they get a bad rap. There are some great sequences in those films. But that aside, I have no interest in seeing them in 3D. They weren’t made for 3D. It’s almost like going to see a badly colorized version of King Kong.

Ok Mr. Mennenga. You have my full support in the attempt to kill, destroy, eradicate this 3D crap. This is the third or fourth time in my lifetime they’ve tried to revitalize this medium and it still sucks. Death to 3D.
