Starz Considers Recasting “Spartacus”

September 27, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

With the sad news last week that actor Andy Whitfield has had to unexpectedly resume treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma  and had dropped out of season two of the Starz hit “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” many speculated on what the show’s future would be.

The show has already taken one hiatus to wait for the star’s return.  And with the actor on the sidelines acting-wise for the near future, the network is considering recasting his role according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Starz has started conversations with casting directors about finding someone to take over the role, reports James Hibbard. According to the report, the leading possibility would find the lead role recast with a new actor. Another scenario could involve a new actor and character taking and being the central character.
If no suitable candidate is found, Starz and producers may opt to delay or cancel production.

The decision to audition other actors was made in conjunction with Whitfield, who is said to support the series continuing forward.

Even if the second season begins shooting without Whitfield as Spartacus, producers are searching for some way to have the actor remained involved in the show. Any credit will also ensure that Whitfield remains an employed member of the production.

I’m of two minds about this. While I love the show and want it to continue, I can’t help but wonder if it would be better to take the financial hit and let the series come to a premature conclusion.

On the other hand, if Whitfield truly supports continuing the show, which I believe given his strong support and dedication to the role and the production int he past, then I can think of no better way to honor his personal struggle than to continue on.

Like John, I’m conflicted about replacing Whitfield. I think you could work a new actor in. Batiatus is the one that bestowed the name Spartacus on the character in the first place, so Spartacus could be like the Dread Pirate Roberts – a title that can be passed along.

Much as I wish Any a speedy recovery and return to the series, there is an alternative – there were female gladiators, gladiatrix.

This would open up a world of opportunities as opposed to the tired old sword and sandal themes to date.
