Slice of SciFi News Briefs

May 22, 2008 By S. K. Sloan 14 Comments

Christian Bale (“Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight”) has agreed to star in all three of the new Terminator films as the grown-up rebel leader John Connor. The first (4th) film titled “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins” will premiere in theaters May 22, 2009.

The discovery of a “frogamander,” a 290 million-year-old fossil that links modern frogs and salamanders, may resolve a longstanding debate about amphibian ancestry, Canadian scientists said on Wednesday.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment announced that “Futurama: The Beast With a Billion Backs,” its second of four planned straight-to-DVD movies based on the hit SF animated TV series will hit store shelves June 24.

Pre-production is about to get under way on the two-part “Hobbit.” Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are expected to pen the scripts based on the J.R.R. Tolkien novel and other Tolkien source material. The 2-parter is being produced by LOTR’s Peter Jackson, while Guillermo del Toro directs. Ian McKellen (Gandalf) has already signed on to the project with negotiations underway with two other LOTR stars that figure prominently in the story, Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) and Andy Serkis (Gollum).

“Moonlight” supporters have purchased full page ads in the Hollywood Reporter and Variety and will march outside Warner Brothers Studio at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 23rd. Numbers are expected to be high as many are in town for the weekend’s first annual Moonlight Convention at LAX’s Westin Hotel. “Moonlight,” the CBS vampire detective story, was recently canceled by the network.

Bandai Entertainment’s newly hired producer, Toshifumi Yoshida, acknowledged in a blog post that he is working on the English dubbed version of Gainax’s Gurren Lagann television anime with Bang Zoom! Entertainment and Aniplex producer Hiroe Tsukamoto. He also emphasized that although America’s SCI FI Channel listed Gurren Lagann in its Ani-Monday timeslot for July 28, the deal has not been finalized. Still, Bang Zoom, Tsukamoto, and Yoshida are working to ensure that two new episodes of Gurren Lagann are ready every week starting in July if the television deal is completed. The cast of the English dub will be announced at FanimeCon this weekend at San Jose, California.

Hmmm…. Unless they are doing something really strange to the Hobbit, Aragorn would only be about 9 years old. So I assume Viggo is playing another part.

Thanks for including the information about Moonlight, the ads that the fandom has placed and the rally and even the con. That is so great that you’d include all this. It is much appreciated by the Moonlight fandom.

Oh! Thanks for including us Moonlight fans (or vamp tramps as a select group of us like to call ourselves) in the news update! We’re working so hard on contacting everyone we can to get a second season pickup and we’re so grateful it’s getting noticed!

Thanks for spreading the word about the Moonlight ads and the convention. Moonlight is such a wonderful program. Hard to believe CBS cancelled a show that won its time slot on Friday nights, won the People’s Choice Awards for Best New Drama (10 million votes) and the lead actor, Alex O’Loughlin, won TV Guide’s sexiest Sci-Fi guy.

Thank you for including news about Moonlight and the ads. The hope is that more supporters who might not be informed of the network’s decision, will be able to come to the rally or participate in the con. Thanks for putting it out there for more to see.
