Tapping Finds Sanctuary

February 12, 2007 By S. K. Sloan 6 Comments

Amanda Tapping, best known for starring as Col. Samantha Carter on “Stargate SG-1” and “Stargate: Atlantis” will be headlining a cast of players for a compelling new web-based SF series for Stage 3 Media, Inc., out of Vancouver, B.C. called “Sanctuary.”

Created by veteran science fiction writer/producer Damian Kindler, “Sanctuary” will also star Robin Dunne (Dawson’s Creek, The Big Hit, Species: 3) and Emilie Ullerup (Battlestar Galactica). Kindler and Tapping serve as executive producers along with N. John Smith and director Martin Wood (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis).

“The future of media is convergence: television, video gaming and social networking will combine to become a single, powerful entertainment medium,” says Marc Aubanel, co-founder of Stage 3 Media. “Sanctuary is poised to be at the forefront of this revolution.”

“Sanctuary” is scheduled to premiere online in spring 2007.

Tapping will be playing a 157 year old doctor named Dr. Helen Magnus who was engaged to Jack the Ripper of all people. They have a daughter together.

The sanctuary is a place of refuge for various kinds of creatures and beings with superpowers and other stunning abilities. Magnus’ father created the sanctuary to study its inhabitants that can range werewolves to vampires to unimaginable things that go bump in the night and they are known as the Abnormals.

In a recent interview Tapping described the opening pilot this way: “…..we have a little boy, Alexi, who is from Chernobyl, who has a weird thing happen to him because of radioactivity.”

The show is sort of a look at the darker side of evolution and the evolving DNA/cloning technologies.

Tapping described her character’s “gift” as the curse of immortality. She continues the work her father began in the world of today. “There are monsters loose in the world. And they are the key to the future of our race.”

Tapping said in the interview that the “Sanctuary” webisodes will follow the exploits of Dr. Helen Magnus as she seeks out all manner of terrifying and monstrous creatures. She is aided in her quest by her reluctant protégé Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) and her carefree spirited daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup). Together they are brought into this frightening and mysterious world populated by beings that defy explanation.

Tapping also indicated that the show may get a visit from her former Stargate SG-1 C.O. Richard Dean Anderson.

This new SF web series sounds very interesting. Can’t wait to hear the interview with Amanda Tapping and Damien Kindler that he mentioned in his new blog -http://sanctuaryforall.blogspot.com/index.html.

Re: “Tapping also indicated that the show may get a visit from her former Stargate SG-1 C.O. Richard Dean Anderson.”

How exciting! I’d love to see RDA make an appearance in this new show.

    Hi Sam,

I am really looking forward to this interview about Sanctuary. I know there are a lot of sci-fi fans out there very interested in seeing how it will all play out.

I’m also just curious and trying to clear something up. Is the information in your comment above based on the “Urban Rush” interview that Amanda Tapping did a couple of weeks ago or is it based on the upcoming interview you all did with Amanda and Damian Kindler? Some of the information (esp. about Richard Dean Anderson) seems new.

Thanks for posting such a nice article about the series.

I need to clear something up that I now realize wasn’t made very clear in my above comments concerning the story. The comment that Amanda Tapping made about seeing Richard Dean Anderson again was not her stating that he would be appearing in “Sanctuary,” but was referring to his possible return to Stargate SG-1 in one or both of the upcoming straight to DVD Stargate movies.

Sorry for any misunderstanding that the wording of the article may have made on this topic.

Learn much more about Amanda’s new online series “Sancutary” and some more news about SG-1 in our future interview with her here on Slice of SciFi.
