“Superman Returns” Opens Well

June 29, 2006 By News Droid 2 Comments

“Superman Returns” with $21M on its opening day. Not too bad for a middle-of-the-week debut at the end of June.

This marks the 8th biggest opening for a Wednesday, just behind last year’s War of the Worlds, which collected $21.3 million. Superman Returns is expected to surpass Worlds in its 7-day total however.

Spider-Man 2 still holds the record for a Wednesday opener with a box office take of $40.4 million.

Oh, wow… This is amazing. Now, I have to admit, I was one of those people who shunned the new Supes movie, saying that it was going to be a rehash of what we got in the first four movies. And at the beginning of the movie, when it shows clips from the original movies, I was steeling myself for a dud. Boy, was I wrong. This movie, while messing with my mind about the Superman mythos, was above and beyond the call of duty when it came to cinematic delight. In other words, delightfully surprised doesn’t even cover it.

It was great, because I went with a few of my friends, and we were all geeking out. We literally reached critical mass on the geek scale. All three of us enjoyed it thoroughly. I even paid for my ticket and one of my friends, and I told him it would be on me. He said after seeing the movie, he would be definitely paying me back. That is the first time I have ever had someone say something like that EVER. This is one of the movies to see this summer, even if you aren’t the biggest Supes fan, as I was.

I saw the new Superman movie yesterday. I stood in a line that stretched around the block to see the first Superman movie in 1978. When I first heard about this new movie, I was against it – I felt it was a dishonor to Christopher Reeves’ memory. He was perfect as Superman. How can you add to perfection? Well, the new movie won me over. I was quite impressed with Brandon Routh. The flying scenes and special effects were seamless wonders to watch. Lois Lane was a disappointment, however. Margot Kidder was a much better Lois Lane, hands down. She had sass and spark which Kate Bosworth sorely lacks. Superman Returns was much better than I expected it to be and I have changed my opinion that it is a sacrilege to Reeves’ memory. Instead, it is an homage.
