Maguire in Spidey 4? Maybe….But Not So Fast!

September 6, 2008 By Sam Sloan 2 Comments

While it might be true that actor Tobey Maguire has reportedly indicated his interest in participating in the next Spider-Man movie, which will make it number 4, we are here to squelch the rumor that he has already signed the contract and the deal is done. Sorry to report that, at least during the time I have written this, those are just rumors and not founded on any solid information.

I would bet dollars-to-donuts (a geriatric phrase the young-ones should start using again) that Tobey will be seen once again in the Spidey costume for the 4th film, but he still has to seal the deal and he hasn’t… yet. One of the sticking points is what Tobey has said from the beginning…he will only comeback to the franchise if Sam Raimi is the director. That too seems likely, but at this time also isn’t a sure thing either.

The other problem is one that many on the inside are familiar with, Maguire’s on-set unpleasant personality, according to E! Online. However, the actor is now so identified with the role it would be very difficult for Sony studio execs to replace him, at least for this film. Perhaps a few years down the road, but not now. Sony would love for Maguire to say no so they could use him as the fall-guy during the search for a new web-slinger. Of course, you will never get anyone from Sony to openly admit to that in public.

If Maguire does opt out, the bigger question is who are the actors Sony would like to see in the Spidey-suit?

In my day it was “dimes to doughnuts.” Says something about the value of a dollar. Or maybe of a doughnut. Or just that I’m getting old.

I for one don’t want Raimi or Maguire back if they are going to do those ridiculous dancing scenes they had in the last one. Spidey needs more depth too. Where are those snarky one liners?
