This week, Summer talks with award-nominated comics and television writer Brandon Easton, and this conversation could have gone on all day.

Talk starts with his documentary Brave New Souls: Black Sci-Fi and Fantasy Writers of the 21st Century, and the experience of making the film and talking to the many creators of color. His inspiration to make the movie began with his confusion over the conundrum of black science fiction fans unconsciously rejecting works created by black writers while simultaneously asking why stories about characters like themselves are being overlooked or ignored.

The bulk of the conversation is fascinating and diverse, covering many topics in and around science fiction creators, stories, and fandoms, from space opera and epic fantasy, to Transformers and Marvel’s “Civil War II” — a major summer crossover event about a clash between Carol Danvers/Ms Marvel and Tony Stark/Iron Man over how to protect Earth (which he has a story in) — and so so much more. We’re going to have to save the deeper scifi literature discussion for another time!

Brandon was nominated for his work on the comic “Watson & Holmes” and “Miles Away”, and noted for his work on “Transformers: Armada” and the Andre the Giant graphic novel biography.

And for the record, the Black Panther comic covers I mentioned seeing as a child were actually “Jungle Action” issues #6 and #16… maybe both those covers merged into one in my memory, but those are the ones I mentioned!

It was a very good episode. I collected New Warriors before Civil War. I’m glad to see Night Thrasher is back. Maybe in the reboot what happened to them in CW got wiped away like a bad memory.
