Puss in Boots pushed up its opening a week and was rewarded with a box-office win. The animated spin-off from the Shrek series took in $34 million in its opening weekend, setting a record for the largest debut on a Halloween weekend.
It was followed by Paranormal Activity 3, which dropped off by 65 percent in its second weekend, taking in $18.5 million.
Fox’s sci-fi tale In Time, starring Justin Timberlake, debuted in third place with $12 million, while Johnny Depp’s The Rum Diary had to settle for a sobering $5 million and a fifth place showing.
Fourth place went to the remake of Footloose.
