“The Cape” Will Remain Light

January 10, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

If you tuned in for the series debut of “The Cape” last night and enjoyed the humorous moments, you’re in luck. Show runner John Wirth tells io9 those types of moments will stay for the series’ run.

“That’s fun,” he says. “We won’t be doing ‘ha-ha’ comedy, but there will be funny situations.”

However, he insisted that the series, which stars David Lyons and Summer Glau, “will be grounded”.

“The trick [is] creating a reality for the world of the show, communicating that reality to the audience, and then telling your stories within the boundaries of that reality,” he explained. “That’s what we’re trying to do. In our world, the stakes are real, the consequences are real [and] the stories have danger elements that are real.”

Wirth also confirmed that the show will feature “an over-arching story” related to the villainous Peter Fleming (James Frain).

“There will be serialized aspects to the show,” he confirmed. “Each week… [the threat will] be someone dispatched by [Fleming], or him, or some other villain.”

If you missed the debut last night, it airs again tonight on NBC at 9 p.m. EST. It also airs Wednesday on SyFy.

“Will remain light” and this is why I have given up on looking to traditional networks for serious drama, especially NBC. They will never be willing to go as far as cable in terms of serious drama, too many skiddish advertisers.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I get a crack out of this show. After all the ‘serious’ stuff, or the stuff that generally involves idiotic attempts at humor, this is good, clean, cliched fun.

The Cape has the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of Heroes while creating an interesting and unique world of its own. I like the ‘gallery of rogues’ idea that the creators have talked about, and what’s not to like about Summer Glau having a starring role?
