Clooney Replaces Downey, Jr in “Gravity”

December 20, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

clooneyActor George Clooney will fill the shoes of Robert Downey, Jr. for the upcoming movie “Gravity.”

Downey, Jr. dropped out of the project in November.  He was originally cast along with Angelina Jolie in the project.  Jolie eventually left the project and a wide range of Hollywood actresses were linked to the role which ultimately went to Sandra Bullock.

Now Downey, Jr. has left the project and will be replaced by Clooney.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the departure of Downey, Jr. nearly deep-sixed the movie.

Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, the film’s script is being kept secret by Warner Brothers executives. What we do know is the film will center on a female astronaut struggling to survive and trying to make it to Earth after a disaster in space. Clooney will play an astronaut who survives the space disaster alongside Bullock.

I honestly think I like this pairing of Clooney/Bullock better than the original Downey Jr/Jolie. I like the latter two as individual actors but could already see conflict and sparks flying causing the director all kinds of angst. Clooney and Bullock are a much better screen fit.

Besides which, I think they’d both make more believable astronauts.
