3-D Coming to A Book Store Near You

It’s in theaters, it’s trying to come home and it’s been used in magazines.

So why not 3-D book covers?

That’s the idea behind a series of reprints of some classic genre novels from Vintage Classics. Five novels will hit stores in 2011 with new 3-D covers and glasses to try and entice readers to buy them for the first or hundredth time. The art will be similar to that used for 1950’s movie posters.

The five novels are:

Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne
Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne
The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Tales by H.P. Lovecraft

According to Suzanne Dean, creative director of the Random House Group, “The 3-D cover is an idea I had thought of a long while ago and had been holding until the right book came along. The Sci-Fi project, with all its B-movie connotations, was the perfect match. … It was a real team effort to produce the covers and was one of the most excitable cover meetings ever when we presented the series, and everyone took turns to try on the 3-D specs.”

So, will you buy new copies of your old favorites with 3-D covers?
