Greenwood: Pike “Essential” for Trek Sequel

August 18, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

We all know the classic crew will be back for the next “Star Trek” installment/

What we don’t know yet is whether or not Captain Christopher Pike will return for the sequel.

If it were up to actor Bruce Greenwood, Pike would return.  Greenwood says that Pike is an essential part of the saga.

“I think Captain Pike is an essential component to the whole franchise,” he tells Collider. “I think there should be a whole offshoot of Pike’s adventures.”

The fact that his character is now wheelchair-bound following the events of the 2009 movie doesn’t faze him at all.

“There’s nothing that says Pike can’t get up and out of that wheelchair, get his own ship and go off on some adventures of his own,” he says. “I’m now an admiral, but I just want to get out of the wheelchair.”

Greenwood is aware of the two-part story “The Menagarie” and the fate of Pike on the classic series. But with the reboot, Greenwood thinks Pike can now go in any direction the movie series wants.

“I had a long conversation about that with J.J. [Abrams] early on, because he wanted the hair to go [white] … because in the script it says the hair goes all white. I said [crying] “Do we have to get so Malcolm McDowell about it?” he said.

I can see the value of some adventures with Chris Pike. It would beat the hell out of the extent of his appearances in the original timeline.

“Captain Pike, would you like some more orange juice?”
    “BEEEEEEEEP!”

I wonder if we can get a Robert April appearance in there as well…

I hope he returns, as he would be the only likable character of the reboot cast . . . oh, wait; I won’t be watching it either way. Never mind.

I’d like to at least have him back paralyzed, possibly with the ability to speak and not in beeps.

Either way, any movie with Bruce Greenwood is better for it.

Loved the series Nowhere Man, the canceled UPN Series starring Greenwood.

I definitely want to see Bruce Greenwood back as Pike in the sequel—-and OUT of the wheelchair!! Up on his feet and ready for action!!
