Actor Sean Bean has joined the cast of the direct-to-home theater prequel “Death Race 2” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The project is for Universal Pictures and is part of a new line of direct-to-home-theater sequels the company is producing for several projects. The first was a sequel to “Smokin’ Aces” that went straight to DVD after the original film did a solid if not spectacular business at the box office and on DVD.
Bean will head up the cast for the project, which is said to be a prequel to the recent remake.
Also in the cast are Lauren Cohan, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo and Frederick Koehler. Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed the 2008 movie, is producing with Jeremy Bolt. Roel Reine is directing.
The prequel is serving as the origin story for the character named Frankenstein, a convicted cop killer (Goss) in a declining American empire where a racing reality show is about to be born in the country’s corrupt prison system.

Can’t he go do another Sharpe movie instead?
He did do Sharpe’s Peril in 2009. I’m still waiting for it on DVD/Blu since it wasn’t aired in the US.
