Disney Wanted Hathaway For “Alice”

Disney Wanted Hathaway For “Alice”

February 8, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

If you tuned in to the Super Bowl last night, you might have seen a new preview for the upcoming Disney live-action, 3-D version of “Alice in Wonderland.”

And while the preview highlights the presence of actor Johnny Depp and the rest of the Tim Burton ensemble of players, one wonders how it might have been marketed if Disney had gone with their original casting choice for the lead role, Anne Hathaway.

Hathaway said she was offered the role several years ago while riding the success of the first “Princess Diaries” movie with Disney. Hathaway goes on to say that she wasn’t as interested in the lead role as another one with the production.

“I told the studio, however, that if they find a director eventually, that I would be interested at a later date in playing the White Queen,” she said.

However, then Burton came in to direct, he had different ideas for casting.

“When Tim came on board he had the cast he wanted and, of course, that didn’t include me,” Hathaway said.

Hathaway said that her take on how she wanted to play the White Queen won over Burton.

“I wanted the Queen to be a cross between Debbie Harry, Greta Garbo, David Bowie, with a little bit of the work of Dan Flavin thrown in for good measure. A sort of psychotic bunny rabbit,” she added.

“Alice in Wonderland” will open in theaters in March.
