Another weekend, another box office crown for “Avatar.” After four weeks, the James Cameron movie shows little sign of stopping its box-office dominance and may be closing in on “Titanic” as the biggest box-office earner of all time.
The film took in $48.5 million this weekend, pushing it to $429 million in domestic ticket sales. That total means it will be the top box-office earner of 2009, passing “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Overall, ticket sales were off just 29% from last weekend, which could mean the movie will have solid staying power. It’s now seventh in the all-time list of box-office earners and could be closing in on “Titanic” soon.
The other top films were much the same as last week. “Sherlock Holmes” uncovered $16.6 million while “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” sang to the tune of $16.3 million.
“Daybreakers,” a new vampire movie, opened in fourth with $15 million. Rounding out the top five was “It’s Complicated.”
