With a solid opening for “Avatar,” talk in Hollywood is now turning to a possible sequel to the most expensive movie ever made.
And it looks like we’ll get even more of a good thing if director and writer James Cameron has his way. Cameron tells MTV News that he has a plan for a trilogy of movies for “Avatar.”
“We’ll follow Jake and Neytiri,” Cameron said. “I have a trilogy-scaled arc of story right now, but I haven’t really put any serious work into writing a script,” he said.
Cameron went on to promise that the time between films wouldn’t be as great as the one he took between directing “Titanic” and “Avatar.”
“From the time we capture and finish the capture, it’s literally nine to 10 months to get the CG characters working, to get their facial musculature working,” he said. “So now we have Jake, we have Neytiri. Sam can step right back into it, the characters will fit them like a glove, and we’ll just go on. So a lot of the start-up torque that had to be done for one movie really makes more sense if you play it out across several films.”
“My next goal is to refine the technique, make it easier so it doesn’t take as long. We were doing a lot of pioneering work on ‘Avatar.’ It wouldn’t have taken as long if we already knew exactly how to do it.”
Hopefully Cameron actually has an idea for making the films a legitimate trilogy and won’t follow the example of other recent trilogies like “The Matrix” and “The Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Fingers crossed for a trilogy more along the lines of Star Wars. I mean, the Na’Vi are infinitely more badass than the Ewoks already.
Just let me know when they’re ready. I’ll be there opening day.
I think a sequel should be generations later with Human and Na’vi working together more often and facing a common enemy. Maybe on another planet.

I’m so there… AVATAR was amazing!! Not the newest storyline.. no. But everything else? WOOOW! Opening day, I’m there… I’ll brave another snowpocalypse.

LOL this is NOT the most expensive movie ever made by a LONG SHOT. Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End cost 300 million. Avatar was 230 million. Get your facts right..
I hope they change the badly-named “unobtainium” to something that doesn’t sound like a writer’s placeholder. Betcha dollars to doughnuts we will see the corporation come back again to try and get “their” resource–just like we saw in the Aliens franchise.
Whatever, I will see this series one way or another; if not just to see more of Neytiri’s tail….

who’s the idiot that said pirates of the carribean cost more, DUMB! It cost 300 millions dollars to make pirates, avatar was supposed to take 230, but finally it took more than 500 millions, get your facts right omg… And if pirates of the carribean cost more, it was more like a fail to me.
This movie is amazing! When I first seen the previews I was sceptical, then I seen the movie. It felt like I was part of the movie. In my opinion, the best movie ever made.
This movie really moved me. The whole experience cut a big hole in my soul and happiness was forever more replaced, along with compassion and desire. Please, James Cameron, know this.
avatar is the greatest movie ever in my opinion, and i hope that if they make a trilogy
the sequel to be as least good as the first part. i have seen avatar on 3d and is awesome, so i wait to see what happens next.

I was really suspecting he had planned it as a trilogy; I just hope its sequel to be as good and breath-taking as the first one..
Visually stunning but otherwise an underwhelming experience. Not a bad movie but nothing to write home about. I was ready for it to end about 30 to 45 minutes before the actual finish.
As Mike or Tim mentioned on the show, I would have loved to have had a joystick during the flight and combat scenes.
Totally pumped for the next movie, I’ll for sure be following this one and it’s my number one favorite movie right now

The end of Avatar was totally set up as like, “WHABAM.” Incoming sequel! I hadn’t heard about it being a trilogy until last night but I’m glad! If it’s going to be another Star Wars or LoTR trilogy, I’m all up for it! I’ll be there opening night regardless of when it comes out, but hopefully it doesn’t take any longer than 10 years again 😀
