King May Revisit “The Shining”

King May Revisit “The Shining”

December 1, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

Best-selling author Stephen King has rarely written sequels.

Yes, he’s tied together many of his fictional works around his opus “The Dark Tower,” but until now he’s resisted revisiting any of his former novels in any significant way.

That may be changing.

King recently said he’s considering going back to the universe of “The Shining.”

The original novel centered on the Torrance family, who went to live at a deserted hotel so the father Jack could maintain the site for the winter while trying to overcome writer’s block.  Jack eventually went mad and on a rampge, terrorizing his son Danny and, in the novel’s finale, killing himself with an axe.  The novel has been turned into a movie and a mini-series.

King says he has an idea to revisit the story now and check back in on Danny.

According to King, Danny would now be 40 years old — and we hope now called Dan or Daniel — living in upstate New York and working at a hospice for the terminally ill. However, given his unique powers, he helps his patients “make that journey” to the other side.

King did say that he’s not convinced himself yet that he should write the novel and that maybe by talking about it in public, he’ll get it out of his system.

I hope he’s revisiting the original story: The one where the Black Guy DOESN’T die.
That killed the whole movie for me. All I could do was sit there and be pissed that they killed a character that not only wasn’t killed in the original story, he was kind of the hero. (But we can’t be havin’ that, now can we?)

(Yeah, I know. If Dan’s 40, then Halloran would by then be gone or a very, very old man.) ; )

Maybe Mr. King should revisit some of his past stories. Most of them were his greatest. I am sure with a little thought and creativity, he could do a masterpiece with a sequel to The Shining. Yes, Mr. King, go back to what you were really good at back in the day…
