Abrams: Don’t Expect New “Trek” Until 2012

November 18, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 9 Comments

If you loved this summer’s reboot of “Star Trek” and were, like many of us, left panting for more, it looks like you’ll have to be satisfied with watching it again and again on DVD or Blu Ray.

During the promotional tour for the recently released to home theater movie, director J.J. Abrams said that it’s looking more and more like the next installment won’t hit screens until 2012.

“It’s like closet space,” Abrams said. “You use what you’ve got. The more time you have, the more time you have to use to hopefully make it a better movie.”

“Yeah, I think that we would be hard pressed to get it on screens by 2011,” writer Damon Lindelof tells SciFi Wire. “If that’s the case, we’d better get to writing right now.”

As for what we can expect, Lindelof says that fans should expect the unexpected when Kirk, Spock and company hit the big-screen again.

One of the things we like to do as storytellers is drop you in the middle of something,” Lindelof said. “And the question that you’re asking yourself is: Where am I in relation to the last time I left these guys? Could this be something that predated even, perhaps, some of the adventures that they had in the first movie? Does it happen five years later? Is it happening two seconds later? Who knows? So we’re not going to tell you.”

The writers are narrowing down their ideas and working on a central script reports SciFi Wire.

As for whether or not we’ll see Khan (as has been heavily rumored since “Star Trek” ended), the Lindelof and Abrams won’t confirm or deny the story, but say that it would have to be “right” script to include Khan in the upcoming sequel.

Let’s just remind Mr. Abrams of a certain quote from the Federation President: “Let us redefine progress to mean that just because we can do a thing (like lens flares), it does not necessarily mean we must do that thing.”

I think I’m the only one in the world that wasn’t bothered by the lens flares. Hell, I didn’t even really notice them until they were pointed out…

I noticed the lens flares, but I didn’t mind them: they added an interesting realism to the film.
    Also: NO KAHN!

I’m kind of bummed it won’t come out till 2012, but I’d rather they did a good job!

I’d been surprised and disappointed if it happen before 2012. That would mean Paramount put a rush job on the production and it wouldn’t have measured up to the first one. So, I’m glad Abrams is keeping a cool head.

Hopefully the new movie will come out before 21 December! 🙂
