“2012” Opens Strong

November 16, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

It wasn’t the end of the world for “2012” at the box office this weekend.

The new destruction thriller from director Roland Emmerich raked in $65 million for its opening weekend.   That total was $5 million more than predicted by Hollywood box office experts.  It continues a solid winning streak of box-0ffice debuts for the director.

In second place was last week’s top box-office draw, the new version of “A Christmas Carol.”  The Jim Carey led vehicle dropped 26% in its second week to take in $22.3 million.

Third place went to “The Men Who Stare at Goats” with $6.2 million and fourth place was held by newcomer “Precious.”

In fifth was the Michael Jackson concert film, “This Is It.”

Happy to say that I contributed to that $65mill. It is, to be fair, a mindless piece of fluff, but it is BIG fluff with roller-coaster-worthy effects. A thrill ride all the way. (Don’t expect a science lesson from this though, it is appallingly bad science, but then again, so is Transformers so use the same suspension of science.)
