ABC Cancels “Defying Gravity”

ABC Cancels “Defying Gravity”

September 14, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 22 Comments

After eight episodes, ABC has pulled the last five episode of “Defying Gravity” and cancelled the series, according to SciFi Scoop.

The network cites low rating for the decision to give the summer series its walking papers.

Fans of the series (including many of the crew here at Slice of SciFi) may be wondering when or if ABC will show the final five episodes of the series.  ABC has been good about airing the final episodes of cancelled series to allow fans to see the final episodes without having to wait for the DVD release.

No word yet on if ABC will do this or when.  As soon as we hear something, we’ll let you know.

Of all the fumn ducking things they could do….Just when it was getting REALLY good! At THE WORST possible time, right at a major cliffhanger, right when everybody wanted to know what the hell was in bay 4……oh man, if they don’t let us know what was beyond that door…..Krazy Joe needs to punch ABC in the junk if they don’t show us!

I had never even heard of the show before Mike and the gang started talking about it.

I finally went to Hulu and watched the first (or was it the second) and then all the rest of the episodes, and then I made sure to watch the newest one on live TV last night.

Oh well .. it sucks that they got canecelled .. but that’s the way is seems to go all too often.

There has been no news from CTV (the Canadian broadcaster producing the show). It still lists the next episode as airing this Friday . They moved it to Friday a few weeks ago, probably as they realized that there’s no reason to simulcast with ABC since they were going to kill it.

It looks like we’ll be getting the rest of the season, which means that there’s still some hope…

Now I’m never going to find out the real reason they’re flying around the solar system. I know it has something to do with “Beta” (that’s what’s in Pod 4), but beyond that …

I really hope ABC shows the remaining five episodes, either on TV or on their website. It’s not the best series I’ve ever seen, but I would still like to see how the rest of the story turns out.

Well that sucks. I have started to love this show. Laura Harris is awesome in it, and is the reason I tune in each week.

It seems like ABC is simply not going to air the show. This does not mean that it is cancelled, because it is a show they bought, not one they produced. It is co-produced by the BBC, Fox Television Studios, and Omni Film Productions (Vancouver) in association with Canadian broadcasters CTV Television Network, SPACE, and German broadcaster ProSieben. ABC only ordered it for viewing after the first season was in the can. It is scheduled to be aired on BBC 2 in the UK, ProSieben in Germany and both CTV and SPACE in Canada, all of whom ARE producing the show. I expect to watch it until at least the end of the season. (In Canada) Any of the T*rrent files I have seen are actually captured from the CTV airing, so you may still be able to get the eps that way.

A rep from ABC states they have not canceled the series. They are mulling what to do with the series. They stated in July they would not be able to air all 13 episodes. This is via thefutoncritic.com.

I expect someone to pick it up, but even if not, I’m pulling for BBC America. This would be a show that could work there.
Regardless, we need to make some noise on this to get some things moving.

I just started watching it… through ep 3 now, was planning on catching up this weekend after hearing about it on the show.

So far, its a slow start. An interesting concept with a good mystery at its core. I liked Virtuality also as it had potential, but the characters talking to the camera got a little annoying. Flashbacks used in Gravity are a better way.

WTF? There were a great deal of scientific things that bugged me but I overall really enjoyed the series. I hope someone else picks it up.

Boring show, boring characters, horrible science, absolutely deserved to be canceled. Nearly every scene was of the so-called astronauts kicking around a bar somewhere.

And the few times on the ship when something actually happens, it was just someone having one of their silly hallucinations again. You’d think that after a while, you’d realize the shit you were seeing is just a hallucination and just go on with your day. Can’t believe I wasted time watching this crap. File this show away on the garbage heap.

I only DVR this show! This is my escape. I can’t believe they are going to cancel it. It has everything. It is so good and not another cop drama. It had a real story. I loved this show from the get go! I got my friends to watch it and my family…

“Boring show, boring characters, horrible science, absolutely deserved to be canceled.”

That’s exactly how I felt about “Battlestar Galactica” during its first season. Weird.

I like the show, but like other sci fi shows set in the future they make great props.

Their space suits use bicycle shoe straps and buckles to secure the two front pieces together.
I some how doubt bike shoe technology advances that far in 50 years.

Seems fit for a cult following that watches on the internet where the producers can really see who and how many watch the show.
Probably too heady for the masses.
So much potential, free it from network tv execs and let the actors act.

I thought it started out good. But then it sags a bit (episodes 3 to 6). But then after that (episodes 7 & 8), the core mystery of the series takes precedence and the show starts to get interesting again.

ABC fracking sucks! It’s never about the audience and only about money. I can’t believe they cancelled this show and it was only getting better. How many crappy tv shows are out there, you have to end the ones that stand out. Oh I get it, it’s not mindless crap that the average joe american would be into, oh that makes sense.

    Eat shit ABC

I love sci fi too and once you let go of the poor science (like instantaneous communication across the solar system – or maybe they use quantum entangled comms devices) to me it ‘s a cross between 2001 and Lost . Doesn’t matter that I never liked Lost I got hooked after seeing the first two shows on BBC and couldn’t wait so watched all thirteen episodes in three or four days.and will watch again as BBC works through them . Best sci fi series in a long time and I am depressed that there won’t be a follow up – I NEED TO KNOW what Beta (and Gama and Epsilon and the rest) are up to ??? BRING OUT THE MOVIE!!!

Was it based on a book ?
Proably could not be done, but if someone wrote a book finishing the story it would sell. Is there a Fan-base/group writing more “episodes” ?
I downloaded and watched all the episodes from canada.

Really hated to see this end, just as it was truly getting very interesting !
