In a weekend that saw ticket sales up 15% over this time last year, the big winner was “District 9.” Made on a budget of $30 million, the highly-anticpated sci-fi movie from new director Neill Blomkamp and producer Peter Jackson took in $37 million at the box office. The weekend take was more than enough for the film to debut in the top spot.
Last week’s number one movie, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” fell by 59% in ticket sales but hung it at the number two box-office spot.
In third was “The Time Traveler’s Wife” with just over $19 million. While the number may not sound overly impressive, Hollywood observers point out that it was a solid opening for a romantic drama.
In fourth was the comedy “Julie and Julia.”
The top four pictures at the box-office delivered solid results, leaving very little for the other top ten pictures of the weekend.
