“Trick ‘R’ Treat” Headed to DVD

“Trick ‘R’ Treat” Headed to DVD

August 14, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

trickrtreat2008posterBefore he worked the scripts for “X-Men 2” and “Superman Returns,” Michael Dougherty came up with his spec script for the horror comedy “Trick’R’Treat.” The movie is an anthology of tales, all taking place on Halloween night but unlike other anthology films like “Creepshow,” each tale has connection or crossover elements.

The film’s tales follow a high school principal who’s a serial killer; a young girl’s quest to find someone special that takes a surprising turn; a cantankerous old man who clashes with a mysterious demon; and a group of teens that experience horrifying consequences after a cruel prank.

Dougherty got the greenlight to direct the film a few years ago and it’s been sitting on the shelves, complete and ready for release. However, it’s languished there with Dougherty taking it out on the road to various conventions and film festivals to try and drum up some support.

The film met with enthusiastic response from fans at the various festivals.

“It was the buzz from those screenings that really kept the film viable,” Dougherty told Wired.com. “It really kept this cult following for us.”

And it looks like the long two-year battle will finally pay off when the film hits the direct-to-home-theater market later this year. In October, the film will be released on DVD and Blue-ray and On Demand from Warner Home Video. The movie screened at the recent San Diego Comic Con, which should only help increase the buzz for the film in the coming months.
