McFarland: Cast DiCaprio in New “Spawn”

McFarland: Cast DiCaprio in New “Spawn”

June 12, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

“Spawn” creator Todd McFarlane wants to see an A-list player in the upcoming “Spawn” movie.

McFarlane told MTV News that he’d like to see actor Leonardo DiCaprio cast in the upcoming film–but not as the title character.

“The main character isn’t Spawn, per se, it’s the guy chasing Spawn,” McFarlane said. “And I’ve always had [Leonardo] DiCaprio in the back of my mind.”

“It’s a big wish, but his dad was a big fan of underground comic books and he came from that,” explained McFarlane. “It’s not a big special-effects movie, it’s a character movie, so I could shoot it in 40-50 days and you don’t have to budget that much time.”

McFarlane went on to say that DiCaprio would not play Sam or Twitch from the comic books because of rights issues with the characters.

“We had Sam and Twitch in the book, but because of some of the stuff I’m trying to sell in Hollywood, we might have to change the characters a bit,” explained McFarlane. “But it would still be a police character who’s chasing down a case and in the middle of this ‘Godfather’-type movie, something weird is out there and no one knows about it except him and a few other people.”

McFarlane’s proposal is to have a restart to the “Spawn” movies that wouldn’t necessarily be a reboot from the original film, but would instead continue the story more in line with the vision of the original comic book series.

I will wait for DiCaprio to refuse the invitation before saying “I won’t see this film.”

I love Spawn. I loath DiCaprio.

I hope Tom Hanks gets the part.

I don’t understand loathing of DiCaprio. The man is a fantastic actor, regardless of feelings about him.

That being said, another Spawn movie? Really?

I loathe both Spawn and Dicrapio. So now I have two reasons not to see this movie.

I have to agree with Jim here, Dicaprio is a wonderful and gifted actor. He has made some mistakes in his choices of films, but that has changed over the years. Have we forgotten George Clooney in Attack of the killer tomatoes?

Only good thing on Spawn was the comics and the animated series that was on years ago. Time to move on to other areas hollywood…..or wait..I forgot you no longer know how to do that.

Comparing DiCrapio with George “Batman and Robin” Clooney doesn’t help either.

I love Leonardo as an actor, hes played great roles and played them great, but if hes going to play in this i think he should play Spawn himself and if he isnt or not i think the movies main character should be Spawn. Why make a movie on his character if ur not gonna make him the main character. People will love to see a new good Spawn movie and if Leonardo Dicaprio play him ull make people love u for the surprise and the odd role. I say do as i say, if u dont get good money 4 it talk to me then
