Writer Chosen for “Short Circuit” Reboot

Writer Chosen for “Short Circuit” Reboot

June 4, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

Number five is alive and headed back to the big-screen.

The remake of the 1986 hit movie, “Short Circuit” will be written by Dan Milano according to Variety.

There may be some hope for the reboot with Milano coming on board as the writer.  Milano has worked on the popular series, “Robot Chicken” and was one of the creative minds behind “Greg the Bunny.”

David Foster, who produced the original and is back to produce the remake with Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde, said that Milano first watched the original while he was in high school, and sparked to updating the concept.

“We’re bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals,” Foster said.

The producer said the robot’s visual look won’t change, even though Foster said Pixar’s “Wall-E” is a dead ringer for the original “Short Circuit” protagonist.

“We think of ‘Wall-E’ as an extended trailer for our film, because it’s the same face,” Foster said.

For those of you who may be two young to have seen the original, “Short Circuit” followed the exploits of Johnny Five, a U.S. Defense Department robot who became self-aware and developed a personality following a lighting strike. Number Five went on to try and prevent its destruction by its makers in the military. Steven Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy starred in the original version and there was a sequel a few years later.

this is one movie they should NOT reboot! The original was fantastic! the sequel wasn’t worth the effort and had none of the magic..the original ‘Short Circuit’ should be left alone..though if they’re going to go through with it, at least bring back the artists who did the closing credits song ‘Come and Follow Me’ and have them record the song again..the same way it was done the first time..
