“Reaper” Will Meet the Grim Reaper

April 6, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

Enjoy the next few episodes of “Reaper” while you can.  A new deal between creators and producers Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters and 20th Century Fox will effectively kill the second season series, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Fazekas and Butters signed the seven-figure deal over the weekend and will  will join a 20th TV series and develop projects for the studio.  The deal also calls for them to leave “Reaper,” produced by ABC Studios.

20th TV chairman Dana Walden remembers first hearing Fazekas’ name more than a decade ago, when writers on the studio’s Fox drama “The X-Files” raved about her skills as an assistant to executive producer Frank Spotnitz.

“They’re incredibly versatile writers,” Walden said. “They have done anything from a family drama with comedy to a straightforward procedural to a show that has sci-fi elements and comedy, and that’s the type of writers we’re most attracted to at this studio.”

“Reaper” has been struggling in the ratings in its second season.  And no wonder–it’s had the unenviable task of going up against Fox’s mega-successful “American Idol.”  The show was listed as “on the bubble” for a third season.

Bummer. Reaper is great fun. I tune in just to see Ray Wise’s performance as the Devil.

Damn you, Fox! You’re gone too far! Now you’re canceling series that aren’t even on your network!

While this doesn’t look good for our show, you can still let the CW know you want Reaper to continue even without them.

Please don’t stay silent. They’ll never know how much you’d like Reaper to stay if you never tell them. Tom Spezialy’s still around, and lots of shows do just fine even after a change in the guards.

Since snail mail campaigns work best, here’s the address for Dawn Ostroff at the CW:

Please consider taking a moment to send in a letter or postcard.

Yet another example of a good show being killed off through greed. The people in charge of the networks need to be castrated!
