“Knowing” Tops Box Office

March 23, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

The combination of Nicholas Cage and director Alex Proyas made for box-office gold this weekend with the new thriller “Knowing” taking the top spot.  The movie came out ahead of hearty competition from box-office draw Julia Roberts’ new movie and the comedy, “I Love You Man.”

“Knowing” took in $24.8 million according to studio estimates from box office tracking firm Nielsen EDI.  The solid opening pushed it past second place’s “I Love You Man” which took in $18 million.

Julia Roberts new spy-thriller, “Duplicity” came in third.

Last weekend’s top film, “Race to Witch Mountain” was fourth and “Watchmen” rounded out the top five.  “Watchmen” is now $2 million short of breaking past the $100 million mark, though some expect the film will have a hard time breaking even for the production costs, much less the huge marketing budget for the film.

While Watchmen has definitely underperformed, if you look at its domestic and foreign totals have made back the 150 million dollar budget.
