Dushku Doing “Dollhouse” For Herself

Actress Eliza Dushku has been working in Hollywood since she was 10.  Now at the age of 28, the actress is looking to take call the shots and take Hollywood on her terms, according to an interview with USA Today.

And the first priority for Dushku was getting more deeply complex stories about women on television.   Dushku said this desire came from her mother.

“My mom is like this hard-core, liberal feminist. She’s a professor in Boston, and she’s been teaching women’s studies for 30 years and international politics,” Dushku said. “So I’ve traveled, and I’ve heard so many women’s stories, and I’ve heard stories of really, really hard lives. And I just feel like there are so many stories to be told, and it’s hard to find someone who can sort of intertwine them with the right kind of action and suspense and use genius metaphors … while striking a chord with the universal theme of the search for one’s true identity.”

To help her realize her vision, Dushku turned to her old friend, Joss Whedon.   Dushku worked with Joss on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” and knew that Whedon was the person she wanted to help her craft the universe of “Dollhouse.”

“I asked Joss to create it with me and for me, and it was really special to me,” she said.

“I wake up and play a different person every day. Playing all these different characters and trying to figure out who your true authentic self is at the core of that as you’re playing all these different roles, and man, that self-awareness starts to come into effect,” she continued. “And you start to see who you really are. That was an important parallel of art imitating life for me.”

“Dollhouse” airs on Friday evenings at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
