Universal Options “Stretch Armstrong” Movie

Universal Options “Stretch Armstrong” Movie

February 16, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 10 Comments

On this week’s show, we told you that Hollywood made have officially run out of ideas with the upcoming big-screen adapations of Ouija and Candy Land.

Looks like we spoke too soon….

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal has optioned the rights to make a Stretch Armstrong movie.  For those of you who may not remember, Stretch Armstrong was a popular toy in the 70’s.  Stretch blond-haired muscled figure whose limbs could be stretched to nearly four feet.   The character had a dog named Fetch Armstrong and a sibling, Evil X-Ray Wretch Armstrong.

This wouldn’t be the first time Hollywood has explored a movie based on Stretch.  The property was optioned in 1998 and was developed a vehicle for Danny DeVito and later, Jackie Chan.

Of course, they didn’t have cool digital effects back then to bring Stretch to life.

Almost makes me feel sad for what we did to him in the name of science as kids. Not really, SCIENCE RULES!

Welding gloves and battery acid can be wonderful scientific assistants.

No, what was fun was using Stretch as your test subject with the chemistry set you got at Christmas as well as using him as a crash test dummy with the vehicles built out of the old metal erector sets we used to get as kids before child haters forced the government to take the fun out of childhood.

    Stretch. Armstrong.

    Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

The next sound you hear will be Summer’s head asploding.

There is no conceivable way that this idea was put forth by someone who had studio profits in mind. What, did someone just take a look at the buzz that Transformers and GI Joe are getting and start going down a list of toys from the 70s that they pulled off the Internet and make pitches for them all? And the one they chose to go with was Stretch Frakking Armstrong?!

Honestly, I’d rather they made a He-Man and She-Ra movie. Why studio shareholders don’t speak up about nonsense like this baffles me…

Oh God, why? What is next, Jacks, the movie? Whiffle ball? I think they may be some of the few toys that haven’t been optioned for a movie.
    Gees, Hollywood, get some originality!
