It’s not surprise that the remade version of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” took the top slot at the box-office this weekend. What is a surprise is the movie’s box-office take of $31 million was about $10 million below most estimates for the updated science-fiction vehicle starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connolly. That lead to the total gross for the top 10 films falling below 2007’s comparable weekend for the first time in weeks.
Of course, last year at this time Will Smith’s “I Am Legend” opened, taking in $77 million at the box-office.
The rest of the top five saw former number one films continuing to do well. Second through fifth were “Four Christmases” ($31.2 million), “Twilight” ($8 million), “Bolt” ($7.5 million) and “Australia” ($4.3 million).
