“Dark Knight” Headed Back to Theaters

December 5, 2008 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

Six weeks after it debuts on DVD, this year’s biggest movie, “The Dark Knight” will be back at a theater near you.

According to Variety, Warner Brothers will re-release the latest Chistopher Nolan directed Batman feature into theaters on January 23.  The re-release is a push to help the movie top one billion dollars in world-wide box-office and as part of Warner Brothers Oscar push for the blockbuster.

“Dark Knight” is currently four million dollars short of a billion dollars.  If it can cross that line, it would join an elite club of films including “Titanic,” “Return of the King,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.”

“Pardon me, sir, but could you spare a couple of bucks so I can get into this exclusive club?” Funny, I don’t remember those other films doing a shameful re-release for the purpose of topping an arbitrary imaginary accomplishment line. I mean, I agree with most that it was a monumental film, but this reeks of robbing us of another $10 or so simply to make the studio more money, not because the movie needs another release.

So, don’t go spend the 10 bucks. As for me, my son and wife, we will be in line for the first showing. And we’ve already seen it twice each in the theater. We also plan to get the DVD Tuesday and are hoping that there will be a Director’s Cut version. I think that they should have done the Director’s Cut for this theater release – that would make it even better!
