ABC cancels “Pushing Daisies,” “Eli Stone”

November 21, 2008 by Michael Hickerson   || Category: TV

ABC gave cancellation notices to “Pushing Daisies” and “Eli Stone” yesterday reports the Los Angeles Times.

The two series will not be picked up for a full second season and will end production after their thirteenth episodes.  ABC president Steve McPherson informed both series of their fate in phone calls yesterday.

“He was very complimentary and thanked everyone for putting their first foot forward,” “Daisies” creator Bryan Fuller said. “He never said we’re canceled but that was the gist of it. He said they’re proud of the show and not ordering episodes at this time. I could read between the lines and interpret that the door could be open in the future but I think that the gist of that is that we weren’t going to be moving forward on ABC.”

ABC plans to run all the produced episodes of each series before bringing them to an end.

Fuller acknowledge that everyone who worked on the show will begin looking for new jobs, which would make it hard for the “door to stay open.” He already has his next gig lined up: returning to “Heroes,” where he worked as a writer in the NBC show’s first season. He also has begun thinking about turning his sweet fairy tale into a movie.

“It’s hard not to be disappointed but I’m walking away with a stronger feeling of pride and gratitude,” Fuller said.

ABC also delivered pink slips for “Dirty Sexy Money.”

The alphabet network will shuffle its schedule in January.  As we previously reported, “Life on Mars” moves to Wednesday evenings following “Lost.”

Awesome, ABC is the new Fox.

  2. Sam on November 21st, 2008 3:38 pm

I’m not too surprised about this latest develpment for both of these shows. I love them both and will miss them, but if Fuller is to be believed, there could be the potential for a big screen version of “PD” sometime in the future. Keeping fingers crossed.

I knew Eli Stone was doomed when during the summer ABC had the chance to rerun them in order instead ran them in random order. How stupid can you be if you want new viewers give them a chance to catch up. It seems the suits are as spart as the automakers and their private jets?!

  7. the lows on November 23rd, 2008 6:19 am

well this was my last two shows. im done. back to board games with my daughter and books. not worth trying to get involved in anything on tv anymore.

    Here’s your sign.
    Damn.

  9. BlindGeek on November 25th, 2008 9:06 am

I’m especially annoyed about Eli Stone’s cancellation. I was the show’s biggest skeptic, and then my friend insisted I watch the first four episodes, so I did … and got hooked. Bought the first season on DVD. Eagerly awaited the new season. And now this.

What really torks me is apparently, Eli Stone’s not being cancelled due to low ratings, but rather to make room for mid-season pilots. Oooooookaaaaaaaay … stupid much?

  10. Jill La Rocque on November 25th, 2008 4:57 pm

I cannot believe that ELI STONE and DIRTY SEXY MONEY are being
cancelled. These are just about the only 2 shows I watch either on
line or on DVR. I really believe that there is a HUGE audience of
these shows that is not properly being represented.

It has been done before ….good, decent shows are cancelled and
replaced by a mid season junker, but shows have been saved by fans
contacting the network and telling them how awful it would be if the
show was cancelled……and it saved the outcome of the show.
Supposidly they are going by Neilson Ratings, but it does not capture
people who DVR, TIVO it or watch it on the web. . I know you all are
busy but it would only take a few minutes of your time. If you can
send this to everyone you know……maybe you can help me save the
    show!

I can see “Pushing Daisies” getting cancelled and “Dirty Sexy Money”, but not “Eli Stone”!!!!!! I loved that show!!!! It was inspiring and beautifully written, awesome characters and original plots. Pushing Daisies was hard to get into, and DSM was just full of sleaze. Bring back Eli Stone GODDDAMMMIT!!!!

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT OF YOUR TIME AND EMAIL/CALL/WRITE ABC to NOT cancel Eli Stone… this is by far the best show to hit television in years, if not decades!

  18. Cherie Buletza on December 4th, 2008 1:23 am

Please, please, PLEASE do not cancel Eli Stone. This is the best show to come along in ages. It’s message is uplifting, the character acting is marvelous, the writing is decent (a few mistakes from episode to episode, but we’ll forgive that), grammar has its bad spots, but so does nearly every other show on TV (can’t people write good grammar any more?), the music is delightful and appropriate in all the scenes. Please, please PLEASE don’t cancel this show!!!!

  21. Gary on December 4th, 2008 5:56 am

Eli Stone is probably the first television show that has upset me so much by being canceled. I love this show. Remember the movie “Steel Magnolias”? There was a scene that took place in the cemetery, most people were crying but with one line we were all laughing, that’s what Eli Stone does to me. This is one series I will purchase the DVDs. Johnny Lee Miller is incredible in this role, I can’t imagine another actor who could do what this man does with this role. The cast just keeps getting stronger, they are all playing so well off each other. I will truly miss this show and i do feel such a loss, it always gives me hope and “Faith” in mankind. Sappy I know but that’s how strongly I feel about the series.

  22. Briana on December 5th, 2008 2:33 am

BOOOOOOOO!!!! Way to go ABC…. Way to cancel yet another GREAT SHOW!!! I love ELI STONE and you had to cancel it. I can understand cancelling the show from not having the viewership. However, I work at night and I miss Eli Stone and Pushing Daises. I watch it the next day online so I don’t miss what happened. I LOVE ELI STONE and I am so mad right now to know that they are cancelling 2 of my favorite shows. It’s not like there’s a lack of things to have a show on. There’s so much that both shows could go on for so many seasons! Way to SCREW UP my Tuesday and Wednesday night shows. I might just not watch ABC all together. Yall just keep screwing up my shows.

  23. Morgan on December 5th, 2008 3:25 am

I wonder if there is any chance SciFi Channel could pick up either of these series?

  24. T Miller on December 5th, 2008 5:19 am

Eli Stone is an outstanding show that imparts an excellent
    parable with each episode.

I think we should all boycott the advertisers, letting them know that if we cannot have Eli Stone - one of THE BEST shows on television - to watch any longer, we will no longer buy any of their products!

I’ll bet that will get those people on our side!

We cannot give up, people! We need to be heard! We need ABC to feel OUR pain!

By getting the advertisers to let ABC know that people (Us) will be boycotting them, due to ABC’s hasty retreat of a show that employs, through story, one of the most exemplary of ways to get people thinking with their hearts and not their pocketbooks.

  25. Kimberly on December 5th, 2008 6:17 am

Come on everyone we have got to save Eli Stone. Eli Stone brings us Faith, Hope and something to believe in. The show has affected me in ways I can’t explain. The show brings us into a deep personal level with the characters. We want to see Taylor and Matt get married and have the baby, whether Nate and Beth get married and have kids and most of all if Eli will ever find love and have a family. In the past I never cared before whether a TV show was canceled or not. That is how deeply I feel about Eli Stone. The producers write about a lawyer fighting for the underdog, a person we think will never win but end up winning, well they should fight for what they believe in and that is that Eli Stone is a great show and it doesn’t deserve to be canceled. It was unfair to cancel the show this early in the season when it just got started. They probably need new writers or switch networks like they did with Scrubs, or switch times or the day it airs. Episode ‘Waiting For That Day’ did really well when it premiered on Sunday. ABC shouldn’t listen to the ratings they should listen to the fans like they did last time which is why we have a second season in the first place. There was a show I used to watch on ABC family when I was younger called Big Wolf on Campus. It literally narrowly escaped death and came back for a third season. So I will not give up hope that Eli Stone will be saved. I know the fans will get it done. ABC just has to listen to us. So COME ON everyone let’s petition, let’s write to the network and if possible send web videos to the network pledging our love to Eli Stone. I LOVE ELI STONE. ABC come on please please please don’t cancel Eli Stone.

  26. Todd on December 5th, 2008 11:18 am

I am so tired of ABC cancelling great shows!!! It goes back to “My So-Called Life”, “Relativity”, “The Nine”, and so on. They need to let these shows find an audience. Now, with “Pushing Daisies”, “Dirty Sexy Money”, and “Eli Stone”, I have had enough!!! Why Why Why?????? Any show with creativity, quirkiness, and heart gets cancelled. I swear if they pull “Brothers & Sisters”, I will boycott ABC altogether.

  27. Terri on December 6th, 2008 5:32 am

We absolutely love Eli Stone. Move it, give it a second chance!!!! Can’t we just have a show that makes us feel good.

  28. Joyce on December 6th, 2008 10:47 pm

ABC what are you thinking! DO NOT CANCEL Eli Stone! That is one of the few shows to come along that sends positive, heart warming messages about love, faith, and goodness in the world. Don’t we need that in these troubled times??? It is insulting to many of us viewers for you to continually produce and support shows that lack the wholesomeness that we want and need today. This is an intelligently written and well casted show. Open your eyes ABC!

  29. Kimora on December 8th, 2008 3:30 pm

ABC please reconsider please don’t cancel Eli Stone. It is my all time favorite show. Eli Stone bring us faith, hope, and something to believe in. I consider it an all time feel good show the only one if its kind. We want to see Taylor and Matt get married and have the baby, whether Nate and Beth get married and have kids and most of all if Eli will ever find love and have a family. In the past I never cared before whether a TV show was canceled or not. Please give Eli Stone some more support, give it another chance. Have a heart ABC Listen to the fans not the ratings like the last time. I will not give up hope that Eli Stone will be saved. I know the fans will get it done. The world really needs Eli Stone right now.

  30. Charlotte on December 9th, 2008 5:44 am

Eli Stone is absolutely one of the best TV shows I’ve enjoyed in years. With so much on TV that has questionable value, why cancel a show that is so positive and draws the viewer into plots that center around helping someone in need? We need this show and more like it.

  31. Michele Lupo on December 9th, 2008 7:41 pm

You finally come out with a decent show and now I’m hearing it’s on the chopping block. I have never written in to “voice” my opinion before but this one really bothers me.I look forward to watching Eli. It’s one of my few pleasures I still have and now you’re going to take it away. I can’t see how it would be because of ratings. It doesn’t make sense. Couldn’t you at the very least try a different time slot? Please reconsider.
    Thanks,
    Michele Lupo

  32. Angela on December 10th, 2008 3:47 am

ABC please do not cancel Eli Stone, or Pushing Daisys. Whats the matter with you people don’t you know good writing, acting and cinimatography……. I don’t know what the heck you gury arre doing, you let got of Men in jTrees & Cashmir Mafia WHAT ARE YIOU THINKING?????
Why are these shows being canceled, and is there anything we can do to change your minds?

  33. Pam on December 10th, 2008 5:45 am

There is a new, very strong effort going on to try and save “Eli Stone”. It’s headed by a very eloquent, intelligent person and even has the vote of confidence from Natasha Hentstridge and Mark Guggenheim. I implore all of you to check out the following site and do all you can: http://www.save-elistone.com Thank you!

  34. Kitty on December 10th, 2008 6:57 am

OMG tonight’s episode was intense, powerful and well written it just can’t be canceled now. ABC please don’t cancel Eli Stone give it another chance. Listen to the fans not the ratings. If you don’t give it to another network it’ll probably do better. Eli Stone is positively one of the best TV shows I’ve enjoyed in years. There are a lot of TV shows that have questionable value, why cancel a show that is so positive and draws the viewer into plots that center around helping someone in need? We need this show and more like it. We want to see Taylor and Matt get married and have the baby, whether Nate and Beth get married and have kids and most of all if Eli will ever find love and have a family. ELI STONE IS THE BEST SHOW ON TV RIGHT NOW. THIS SUCKS.

  36. Aleck Carroll on December 11th, 2008 3:39 am

This is why this country sucks. All these top executives think they no exactly what people want but they don’t. I think they need to find a better way to find out what what people want. I think we should get a bigger voice. How is putting a GREAT SHOW LIKE ELI STONE on a 10:00pm going to help gain ratings. Eli Stone is something that we all need. I know that no one at the abc is going to reads this but if you do why don’t you do a hell of a lot more research and I am sure you will find that there a lot of people that really love this show and try to do what you can to keep the show. Normally I don’t give a crap and am to lazy to do anything about things like this but I really love this show as well as many other. KEEP ELI STONE.

  37. Kale on December 11th, 2008 6:05 am

I just saw this on the tv guide web site ‘But should ABC be-leave you hanging, a show rep says the 13th episode will deliver closure and “bring us full circle to the Patchouli Peaks.” Also watch for Katie Holmes’ character, Grace, to get a mention in one of the remaining shows. Alas, no new eps are scheduled beyond Dec. 30.’ Somebody answer me this how will they fit the remaining episodes in a matter of a few weeks somebody please tell me. WE HAVE JUST GOT TO DO SOMETHING WE JUST HAVE TO SAVE ELI STONE. WE THE FANS DID IT BEFORE AND WE CAN DO IT AGAIN. YEAH COME ON!!!!!!!

  38. Dale on December 11th, 2008 8:54 am

Eli Stone is a witty, quirky, thoroughly engaging television show. I am a lawyer and it is an absolute shame that ABC has seen fit to pull the plug by not renewing orders for episiodes of Eli Stone and Boston Legal. You just committed reversible error! Please reconsider your ruling and leave these intelligent, thought provoking, and thorougly entertaining programs on the air. Those of us who are in their 50’s deserve programs that appeal to our generation and our buying group. We have the money to buy the products advertised during these programs. Whatever happened to artistic excellence? Perhaps these shows need to switch to a network that would appreciate them. I know that I will follow them if they switch networks as will some 200 people I know who watch these programs on a regular basis.

  39. Kyra on December 12th, 2008 3:20 pm

Did anyone see Whoopi Goldberg on the View yesterday. She doesn’t want Eli Stone canceled either. Right on we need more support from the celebrities. Eli Stone just can’t be canceled.

  40. sara on December 13th, 2008 5:06 pm

I very enjoyed watching Eli Stone. It was one of a small handfull of shows that was worth tuning into every week. It received high ratings but still was shown the boot. I don’t understand! Who is the IDIOT that made that decision???

  41. sara on December 13th, 2008 5:08 pm

I agreed with Client. Eli Stone is the best show on TV these days.

  42. Barbara on December 14th, 2008 5:56 am

My husband and I have watched Eli Stone from the first show and wondered who was the genius that came up with such a through provoking and yet fun show to watch. We enjoyed the musical productions and the talent. I hope FOX or picks this show up or another network with some “vision” of their own sees what a gem this show really is.

  43. Kristen on December 15th, 2008 6:56 am

Eli Stone is a powerful well written show. I just heard that Guggenheim Eli Stone’s writer is nominated for a writers guild award so if we all vote for him to get that award that might save the show. WE CAN SAVE ELI STONE.

  44. Kyle on December 16th, 2008 7:02 am

ABC dudes don’t cancel Eli Stone. That show is totally awesome it doesn’t deserve to be canceled it deserves another chance.

  45. Cyn on December 17th, 2008 3:27 am

Eli Stone . . . .a show that isn’t sophomoric or juvenile . . . . rather an out-of-the-ordinary plot that entertains. Not a good move, ABC. There’s a lot of crap out there, and the ratings this fall proves that!

  46. Kory on December 17th, 2008 6:38 am

I think Eli stone is a great show.. it ’s meaningful topics hit home with a lot of people and really makes you think….. and does it in a funny quirky and entertaining way…. do not cancel this show it would just be ridiculous.

  47. Rita on December 17th, 2008 7:53 am

ABC Eli Stone is one of the few optimistic shows currently on television.
Why cancel? Does the show not involve enough sex and blood in the story lines? ABC you are making a big mistake!!!

  48. Kasey on December 17th, 2008 3:36 pm

It is such a shame that a ridiculous network like you can go and axe one of the most amazing beautifully written shows in a long long time. You are pathetic!!!! You should be ashamed of yourselves ABC! Like we need more shows like Grey’s with annoying, whiny characters!! I hope Karma strikes you down. Mr. ABC. Please don’t cancel Eli Stone.

  49. Kammy on December 18th, 2008 3:17 pm

I agree that the cancellation is pointless because the show is amazing. Though the second season did get off a little bumpy thanks to the stupid strike but the first was amazing. I believe if a third season was allowed to follow it could redeem itself and be like the first season.

  50. Laura on December 18th, 2008 9:41 pm

The networks have done it again!!! They have made another stupid decision to cancel a great show because the ratings indicated it was not a moneymaker.. Why is it that the brains at the networks think every person wants to work all day and come home to watch what they have been watching all day, REALITY. Is it because it’s cheaper to produce and that most viewers are mindless bafoons. Think back to how many great shows were on the verge of being axed because of ratings. Can you say Mash? Isn’t it about time the networks, ABC in particular, make an intelligent decision about a quality show.

THERE IS NOT ENOUGH “FEEL GOOD” TELEVISION TODAY.

    SAVE ELI STONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  51. Kammy on December 22nd, 2008 7:05 am

Given the chance, with time, and maybe a little more marketing, this show could be a huge success. It is such a breath of fresh air from all of the stupid staged “reality” shows, that are anything but reality. Give it a chance Seinfeld wasn’t a success at first eithe. I think the viewing audience is ready for a fresh show like this, instead of the cookie-cutter, mass produced repeats that are the line up every night. where is your artistic integrity?

  52. Jackie Pion on December 23rd, 2008 12:01 pm

We finally get a show like ELI STONE, a show with morals, character, and a sense that there is hope in this confused violent sex obsessed world and you want to cancel it. Growing up we had shows like happy days, laverne and shirley, harmless shows that brought the entire family, young old, teenagers and parents together to watch. Eli Stone has done that for my family a mom of 2 teens and a younger son under 10, a husband and an uncle have found a comman ground to come together and enjoy a TV show. We have discussions at the dinner table about it and can’t wait to see what we all will learn next episode. Please reconsider the cancelling of ELI STONE. My family has grown to love it and lets face it in this crazy world we live in it is AWESOME to have something that brings us together as one.

I am totally shocked..What is that seriously? a joke? It has been long since that show proved its worth. How can this be done with that much audience? People adore that show ABC. You gotta hear them. This show deserves a 3rd season at least. That is one of the best drama shows going on TV right now. ABC you can’t axe such a great show. Give people what they need, that show is unique and one of the best right now.

  55. Cally on December 30th, 2008 3:37 pm

I just heard from USA today website Eli prepares for his brother’s wedding as Eli Stone (ABC, 10 ET/PT) prepares to exit the schedule — at least until summer, and possibly for good. Eli wasn’t a perfect series, but it was different and sometimes wonderful. A longer run would have been wonderful as well, but it’s not to be. UNTIL SUMMER does that mean they’ll show the remaining episodes over the summer. Does anybody know.

  56. Jeannie on December 31st, 2008 6:17 am

OMG Two Ministers was such an amazingly awesome episode. Beth had a great voice, the transgendered minster was great, Taylor’s baby was emotional and I can’t believe they left us with such a huge cliffhanger: Eli with a bloody nose. Now we might have to wait till summer for the final four I can’t believe it. They can’t cancel Eli Stone it has amazing writing.

  57. Ambra on January 2nd, 2009 3:14 am

Please please ABC bring back Eli Stone. Get rid of the reality shows or According to Jim it has been on longer and put Eli back on t.v. I loved this show so much. It really made me feel and would bring tears to my eyes.

  58. Gloria on January 3rd, 2009 6:19 am

Oooooh I thought this week’s episode was super awesome. I just can’t believe they left us with such a huge cliffhanger. ABC just can’t cancel Eli Stone. ABC must not care what viewers are interested in watching. Shame on them! I echo what has already been said about many of the moves ABC has made in the last several years… “Eliminating shows like Eli Stone are the reason that ABC is not on top.”ABC keeps Wife Swap, Supernanny, America’s Funniest Home Videos because its cheaper than script shows. If only CW had the guts to put Eli and Daisies on Sunday nights, I’m sure they will have better luck. Eli Stone does not deserve to be canceled with such great writing like this.

  59. Allison on January 4th, 2009 5:54 am

Eli Stone is one of the best shows on tv. It is unique, not another detective show or sex obscessed meaningless dialogue. It actually has a message to consider. How refreshing! Is that perhaps why you are canceling it? Come on. How much of the other crap can one watch. Not much from this household.

PLEASE RECONSIDER KEEPING ELI STONE ON TV!

Eli Stone has made such an impact! Well-written, with subtly-crafted scripts, it is a joy to watch! Please recognize the potential that this show has. I say, PLEASE ABC BRING IT BACK!! DO NOT CANCEL IT!! Change the time or day slot, whatever, but BRING IT BACK ON!!

ABC Please consider bringing Eli Stone back to prime time TV. There are so few shows that combine the ultimate combination of elements: unique plots, multi-dimensional characters, thought-provoking conflicts, humor and drama, intense and energetic acting — all without off-color language and scenes. If you are afraid that the show is too quirky or too intellectual, then you are underestimating the viewing public. Bring ELI STONE back to television.

I have never signed up with a web site in order to voice an opinion until now. I only watch 2 non-cable shows and now I guess I am down to just 1. If you want to cancel something, get rid of some of the worst shows like The Bachelor or Desperate Housewives and let us have a FAMILY hour. Not all TV viewers are into nothing but lies, sex and violence. Eli Stone was the one show that we, as a family, could watch and enjoy. I guess that God, miracles and hope are a thing of the past. Too bad, I now have no shows on ABC left to watch. I hope USA or TNT will have the good sense to pick it up and run with it.

I don’t understand why ABC would cancel Pushing Daisies and keep Life on Mars? Pushing Daisies is clearly a better show.
