Former “Smallville” producers Alfred Gough and Mark Millar have signed as the writers for the upcoming “RobotTech” movie according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The writing team are no strangers to big-screen adapations of popular franchises with writing credits for “Spider-Man 2,” “Lethal Weapon 4,” Shanghai Noon,†“Shanghai Nights,†“Showtime,†“Herbie: Fully Loaded,†and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.â€
A previous draft of the script came from writer Lawrence Kasden. Warner Brothers has the screen rights to the movie and are reportedly bringing in Gough and Millar to keep the project on the development track.
“RoboTech” is a popular anime series from the 80’s, taking place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.
Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are producing with Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello for Warner Brothers.
No word yet on who will star in or direct the movie.
Please, God, please, don’t let them screw this up. My childhood weighs in the balance. Many many hours of my childhood pivot on this. I need the Veritechs to be better than Transformers, and the Zentradi need to be big and scary.
Oh, and please make the live action Minmei worth the wait. And make it so she can sing better than the cartoon.
