LucasFilm/Del Rey Confirm New Book Deal

November 4, 2008 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

“The Force will be with you” for thirty-five more “Star Wars” tie-in novels.

LucasFilm and Del Rey confirmed a new deal had been struck to continue the two companies long patnership in creating new books about “a galaxy far, far away.”

The new deal will see the publication of thirty-five fictional tie-in novels and ten non-fiction books before the end of 2013.   Included in that is a new nine book series, launching in April.  The series called “Fate of the Jedi” will continue the storyline recently concluded in the nine-book “Legacy of the Force” series.   The novels take place several years after “Return of the Jedi” and follow the further adventures of Luke, Han and Leia.

Novels based on the “Star Wars” universe have been top sellers for Del Rey, dating back to the initial tie-in novelization 30 years ago.

“Our relationship with Lucasfilm is treasured,” said Gina Centrello, President and Publisher of the Random House Publishing Group. “We are extremely proud of our Star Wars publishing program, which is the cornerstone of the Del Rey list.”

Howard Roffman, President of Lucas Licensing, said “The legacy of Star Wars publishing began with Del Rey. “For more than 30 years they have been a superb partner with an unflinching commitment to keep Star Wars fans informed, entertained and enthralled.”

The latest “Star Wars” novel to hit shelves is a stand-alone novel, “Millenium Falcon.”

Post-“Legacy”? Awesome. ‘Cause even if I wasn’t exactly thrilled with how that series turned out, Kyle Katarn was a big character, and he’s awesome, so hopefully that’ll continue.

It’s DEL REY. I’m pretty sure that Del Rey Books were started by the famous author Lester Del Rey’s wife.
