Apple Adds Podcast Application to iPhones

Apple Adds Podcast Application to iPhones

October 30, 2008 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

A proposed firmware upgrade means you’ll soon be able to listen to Slice of SciFi and any of our other FarPoint Media shows on your iPhone.

TG Daily reports a new firmware upgrade will include the abiity to directly download podcasts to your iPhone.

Earlier this year, Apple rejected the use of the Podcaster application at the Apple Store, arguing the software mimics features currently available in the Apple Store.

The feature was recently proposed by a third-party developer who created an application called Podcaster, which also downloads podcasts directly – and not through the iTunes interface. A leaked screenshot of the new firmwave update shows what appears to be an iPod interface with a podcast section.

Nothing official has been confirmed by Apple. As soon as we have details on how you can have Slice of SciFi on your iPhone, we’ll let you know.

I already do listen to Slice of Sci-Fi on my iPhone, as well as the fab Voicemail show. But that’s becasue I download it through iTunes and sync it to the phone. What’s exciting about this news is that this will allow iPhone users to download podcasts directly to the phone over wi-fi — possibly also over 3G and maybe even Edge. So, if I miss syncing Slice while I’m out of town or something, I can just grab it out of the air!

Here’s hoping that it works on the Ipod Touch as well. So many people out there forget that there are a bunch of users not on the Iphone, but on it’s little brother. This is a feature that I’ve been wanting on my touch since I noticed the itunes icon. It’d be great to be able to pull podcasts while the touch is setting in the radio charger rather then having to sync it to itunes. This would also allow me to download my podcasts from work with out having to erase and sync my song library to my work computer. Now if they would allow you to sync a touch to more then one computer at a time.

I’ve been using the ‘Podcaster’ application for a while now and it is great to be able to download or stream podcasts directly to the iPhone. Very cool. 🙂
