Rocky Horror Remake? — Say It Isn’t So!

September 23, 2008 By S. K. Sloan 12 Comments

Rumors are running rampant on the internet that MTV Productions is considering a remake of the classic Richard O’ Brien creation “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” One word — Blasphemy!”

As long as Richard O’Brien and Tim Curry remain alive on planet Earth there can never be a remake of this classic satire….and I mean NEVER!

Oh wait! That isn’t the only piece of ridiculous news concerning this horrendous remake idea. Are you ready for more? MTV wants its illegitimate step-child Russell Brand to play the part of Dr. Frank-N-Furter! Did you loose your balance? I did when this came across my news desk, and I’m not talking about getting all fainty in a good way either. Worse than even thinking about doing a remake of this classic piece of stage-to-film work, is even giving one minutes worth of thought of having Brand assume the role that Curry, and Curry alone, can pull off with any kind of real authenticity. What’s next? One of the Hansen twins playing the role of Eddie Ex?

Along with this unsubstantiated rumor is another that says Richard O’Brien isn’t the least bit thrilled over the idea of a remake, especially one in which he isn’t involved with, as it appears to be the case with this supposed MTV production. Can you blame him? Usually, this kind of raw rape of one’s original work is done only after its creator has left their mortal coil. I guess MTV doesn’t want to wait that long.

Wouldn’t Richard O’Brien still have the rights to his creation? If so, how could it be made without his blessing? And if not… I’m a putz…

I think it would be possible for a Rocky Horror remake, but I think it could only be remade with Tim Burton directing, and Jonny Depp playing Franken Furter. Oh, and Dwayne Johnson as Rocky, of course.

In my Indiana Jim way… here’s hollywood trying to remake another piece of crap that isn’t worth the celluloid it was originally filmed on.

    Unsubstantiated, it isn’t: link

There’s a “Stop the Remake” petition, although I rather doubt it will actually change any studio execs’ minds.

Burton, Depp and Johnson….now that could possibly work. 😉

The problem with this idea is twofold:

    1) The charm of the original is in the details. Get rid of those, and you have a half-baked musical that either takes itself too seriously or (god forbid) not seriously enough. Keep them, and there’s no reason to do a remake unless you’re Gus Van Sant.

    2) The hardcore fans, those most likely to watch this, will reject it in droves because to them there is only one movie. Some of them don’t even like the musical the movie is based on, so how on earth does MTV think they’re going to get them to take this drivel? As for the “normal” folk, most don’t know or don’t like RHPS enough to bother.

This project has FAIL etched all over it. I can’t even get worked up about it anymore. Like so many other bad movies, it will become that which shall not be named. Meanwhile the “real” movie will continue to live on.

Saw the original movie. It was pretty terrible anyway. Thus, I guess this goes on my “Shrug, WGAF? Shelf”. Never saw the hype, just met some really ‘questionable’ individuals.

“…the role that Curry, and Curry alone, can pull off with any kind of real authenticity.”

Actually, I’ve seen Anthony Stewart Head perform Sweet Transvestite, and I was mightily impressed. (It’s on YouTube. Go take a look.) He played Frank in the stage version in the West End many moons ago. He’s probably too old for MTV’s tastes, though.

I think the main reason that a remake won’t work is that it will be too self-aware. I mean, the original is campy as hell, but the cast had no idea it would become the phenomenon it is today. The new cast can’t help but be aware of its following. MTV seems to be trying to make a new version in the hopes that it’ll be a blockbuster like High School Musical. I’ve got two words for them: Shock Treatment. Even O’Brien couldn’t duplicate the magic of RHPS.

Not to mention the plot behind the movie is insipid and stupid. It could have been funny like Mel Brooks. Instead it became a disco-acid trip.

The *only * time this movie is bearable is when you’re watching it with a live audience. If you don’t have 30+ people MST3K-ing it, it’s absolutely horrid. That said, seeing it with the audience is awesomely fun 🙂

Actually, I was just recently out to Dinner with Pat Quinn and Nell Cambell, we talked briefly on the re-make and I was surprised to find out that, Ricard actually does not own the rights to The Rocky Horror Picture show, he had sold them to be able to make the movie back in 75′ and Lou Adler now owns the rights, another interesting fact, is that Richard only recently re-aquired the rights for the Musical Production, sad but true.
