The British television series, “Life on Mars” got its name from a David Bowie tune and now this spin-off, which acts as a continuation of “Mars,” will also take from Bowie. “Ashes to Ashes” stars “Mars” actor Philip Glenister as Detective Gene Hunt and a 21st Century police psychologist named Alex Drake, portrayed by Keeley Hawes. Drake pairs up with Hunt after coming-to from a gunshot wound. Like “Mars” she wakes up in the past (27 years in the past) to 1981. The audience is again faced with the question, “are these events real or a comatose driven imagining?”
As far as Drake is concerned she has somehow been granted a second chance at life or another trip to death. She basis this on notes left behind by Detective Sam Tyler, the main time-shifting character from the “Life on Mars” series.
“Ashes to Ashes” co-stars “Mars” alum Chris Skelton (Marshall Lancaster) and Ray Carling (Dean Andrews) and new team member Sharon ‘Shaz’ Granger, played by actress Montserrat Lombard.
The new British TV series shouldn’t be confused with the Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell comedy film of the same name. That movie is still under consideration.

In this series the time travelling Drake is aware of Sam Tylers “delusions” so she thinks that she is in a coma and that everyone is a construct of her own imagination which leads to some quite amusing incidents. Life On Mars was like an old British cop show like the Sweeney. Ashes To Ashes has elements similar to The Professionals. Oh, and the 80s music rocks.
It has only finished one season. When is the next season running.
I thought Life on Mars was up on iTunes, but could not find it just now, and nothing for Ashes to Ashes.
