Frank Miller’s “The Spirit” isn’t set to be released until January 16, 2009 but the movie is already the talk of Hollywood and with the new trailer looking as awesome as it does, the anticipation for the movie is expected to reach a fever pitch once the teaser gets national distribution.
The trailer debuted at this weekend’s New York Comic Con and reminded everyone who viewed it of another Miller collaboration — “Sin City,” which he did with famed director Robert Rodriguez of “Grindhouse” fame.
The trailer has that same look and feel to it that “Sin City” had. Shot in the new CG-looking black and white, the look was perfect for its subject matter, the crime crusader who creates his own death to be able to fight the bad guys from the dark shadows of cityscape.
The trailer shows The Spirit as he crosses the floor of his cat-filled home to answer a ringing phone. He then puts on his trademark suit and red tie and climbs to the rooftop disappearing into Central City’s cold wintery night. What is cool about the piece is his red tie is the only color seen in the darkened trailer.
“The Spirit” stars Gabriel Macht as the title character, Samuel L. Jackson as his arch-nemesis Octopus, Scarlett Johansson is Silken Floss and Eva Mendes plays Sand Saref.
nobody does comic noir better than frank miller. even so this looks like a deliberate batman ripoff cash in just like
watchmen.
I’m no comic guy, but all of my friends who are are actually upest by the new trailer. They tell me that “The Spirit” should NOT be black and white, and that Miller is simply doing only what he has learned from Sin City, despite that the mood for the two films should be completely different. I mean, The Spirit’s signature suit is blue, and you can’t have a blue suit, when it’s black & white.
I’m not yet convinced that the actual film will be all black and white with hints of color. I think it was done just for the trailer. But….I could be wrong since I currently don’t have an inside track with Mr. Miller.
