Orci & Kurtzman Tackle Man of Steel

March 12, 2008 By S. K. Sloan 6 Comments

Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the scribes behind the mega hit movie “Transformers” and the much anticpated J.J. Abrams “Star Trek” pic will next tackle the mighty superhero for Bryan Singer’s “Superman: Man of Steel.”

routh.jpgEven though the sequel to “Superman Returns” won’t be seen until after the premiere of the “Justice League of America” film, Singer is gearing up for this next film in the Superman franchise and promises that this one will be both character driven and full of high-intensity action.

“Yes, I’m just getting back with writers after the strike,” Singer told Empire Online. “[We’re] just in the development phase. I’m starting to develop a sequel … with the intention of directing it.”

“The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film,” continued Singer. “I’ll be the first person to own up to that without making any apologies for it. I knew it was going to be that from the outset. And now that the characters are established, there’s really an opportunity to up the threat levels. … Clearly there’ll be a body count [laughs]. From frame one, it will be unrelenting terror! All those teenage girls who found the movie and mooned over James Marsden or Brandon [Routh]? Well, I’m going to wake them up!”

With that little announcement, we can now say that Routh will definitely be returning in those blue tights and red cape as Superman for this next super flick.

Please, please, PLEASE use a different villan other than Lex Luthor. All of the movies have him in it and it’s time to branch out, long overdue in my opinion. Let’s see Braniac or Darkseid come into this world. It’s time to expand Supe’s rough gallery.

I second the Darksied suggestion. It’s time for a new villain and if you’re going to shake things up from that first outing, Darksied is the way to go.

I love Lex Luthor! Kevin Spacey was awesome.
And I’m quite excited about the choice of writers. Anyone else who read their posts on the Transformers movie official forum knows that when they get into a project they really immerse themselves into it. And I’ve been re-watching Alias lately and they did good work on that show.

Darseid would be a bit of a stretch for the big screen. There’s an entire mythos behind him and his world that would surely be given short shrift by this guy and his romatic superhero fascination. Brainiac is a better choice. He’s an alien computer intelligence and it could be spun as an invader-type story, and raise some fears of Superman in the general populace as he’s an alien, too. They could fear him as a potential alien invader, simply defending his turf against the competition, and it could work as an invasion story / hero redemption tale.

I agree with Spork on this one. Darkseid is too big of a character to be able to flesh out in one two hour movie. Unless they plan on doing a series of two or three movies to develop the full extent of the mythos surrounding him then they could never do it justice and it will kill the franchise for good. I also think that Brainiac would be the perfect choice for the Man of Steel.

I wasn’t a fan of “Superman Returns” for two reasons:

    1) It was the same exact plot as the first Christopher Reeve movie. Lex kills many to get land that isn’t there and/or valuable now, but will be.

    2) They made Superman reflect the new American Way; they made him a dead-beat dad. I hate that they did that to him. Now in “Man Of Steel”, Kal-El better get some sponsorships, Captain Amazing-style (from Mystery Men), just to pay his back child-support. The American Way has a negative cannotation now, thanks to that particular plot device.
