Slice of SciFi News Briefs

August 9, 2007 By S. K. Sloan 3 Comments

Adrian Paul is returning to TV. He will once again star as Duncan Macleod in Davis & Panzer’s 5th Highlander movie. “Highlander: The Source” will air on the SCI FI Channel September 15, 2007 @ 9PM & 1AM ET and again on September 20th @ 9 PM ET.

Marvel Studios is setting Matthew Vaughn to direct “Thor,” based on the Marvel Comics character. Marvel is aiming for a pre-strike production start this winter.

After 10 years, and thanks in part to the huge Shrek franchise, DreamWorks is moving toward that $1 billion mark for domestic box office, making the company founded by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen a winner again after several uphill battles.

As if they just couldn’t learn from the first attempt at failure, a sequel to Steve Martin’s homage to Peter Sellers and The Pink Panther will be on the way. When I say failure I’m not talking box office. The first film with Martin grossed over $140 million worldwide. That’s mega-bucks for a comedy. By failure I mean its lackluster performance and inability to come even close to matching the masterpiece of comedy that Sellers was able to bring to the Panther franchise.

This next one will continue with Martin as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau and he will be joined by Monty Python alum John Cleese as chief inspector Dreyfus (that could be a hoot), Andy Garcia, Alfred Molina and Aishwarya Rai. The talent is there, now all they need is a decent script which was sorely lacking in the first remake.

It’s finally official — After a long and frustrating negotiation process Blockbuster Video is taking over MovieLink. One can only guess what it finally cost the rental giant. They have made several attempts in the past to purchase the studio-owned movie download service but each offer was rejected. The last known bid of $70 million was snubbed last year. Blockbuster chair and CEO Jim Keyes told Variety this deal is the next “logical” step in the company’s transformation.

“Now, in addition to the entertainment content we provide through our stores and by mail, we have taken an important step toward being able to make movie downloading conveniently available to computers, portable devices and ultimately to the TV at home,” Keyes said.

The beautiful Carla Gugino (“Threshold,” “Sin City”) has joined the cast of “Watchmen,” the upcoming film based on Alan Moore’s DC Comics series, as Sally Jupiter aka The Silk Spectre. She joins previously announced cast members Billy Crudup, Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Malin Akerman.

JJ Abrams will start shooting the next Star Trek film under his direction beginning November 5, 2007. The film is set for a December 25, 2008 release.

In our final brief, the great Harvey Keitel is in talks to join the cast of the CBS drama “Criminal Minds.” He would replace Mandy Patinkin, who quit the show several weeks ago. I can’t think of any veteran actor out there better suited for that kind of role. Perfect casting.
