I considered putting Firefly/Serenity as an option because it is, without doubt, one of my all-time personal favorites, but, I decided to stick with the ones that have been around long enough, and have had enough time to make a serious impact on how the whole world perceives what space life may be like (scif geek and novice alike). When that is taken into consideration I had to be honest and eliminate Firefly from the equation. Trust me, it wasn’t easy to leave it out of the mix.
Do people really think that “space travel and what life may be like beyond planet Earth” will be a bunch of people beaming in and out, wearing totally unsuitable clothing, imposing morals left right and centre…..
Not really because BSG has a history in the minds of people going back nearly 30 years, but I made a distinction in that history by separating the two series by Old and New. This new BSG is not a different one from the older version, but a reimagined, more grownup one.
I also think that the premise behind Firefly/Serenity, as far as what it could be like for space travel and what we will find out there, is a little more realistic than most. I would prefer to believe that Gene Roddenberry got it right, but after 5 million years of human evolution, we are still not much more than brute beasts of the field with a kill or be killed mentality, only with greater technological means of destruction at our fingertips. I really do hope Gene proves to be the ultimate winner, but, as our long history and current situation has proven, it is more likely that Joss’ vision will be more on the mark.
Like I said above, the only reason I didn’t include Firefly/Serenity was length of time exposed to as many as possible, and I am afraid that most of the people of the world are still not aware of it or its premise at all, while almost everyone on the planet has at least a cursory awareness of the others listed, especially Star Trek and Star Wars.
I’m with Enormous and Mark in St.Louis – I highly doubt that intergalactic travel will take place via warp drive or hyperspace or folding space or what-have-you. That’s why I picked Alien. Firstly, the life is more unlike humanity than any other of the shows. Secondly, cryo-sleep seems at this point to be the most likely way of having a human survive that travel.
If I wanted to pick my favorite, I’d have said Farscape.
Old BSG Sam sure I’ll agree with your logic, but the reasons you did not include Firefly/Serenity still apply to new BSG, if you included it should have just been one BSG entry not seperate.
In defense of Star Trek… Maybe it received a large number of votes because it has shaped how we view space travel philosophically instead of how we view it practically. I think most people recognize that the technology and alien physiology portrayed are expedient for purposes of storytelling on television. On the other hand the ideals presented by the people of the Federation are what we aspire to. Space is a clean slate for humanity. Of course, even Star Trek has Section 31 and the Maquis. The conflicts among the races portrayed in the Star Wars franchise are probably closer to reality (United Nations, rogue states, etc.).
What about Stargate? Everyone in two galaxies speaks English? 😉
