Saturn Awards Winners

saturnaward_01.jpgSuperman Returns led the Saturn Awards on May 10, taking home five awards, including best fantasy film and best director (Bryan Singer). On the TV side, NBC’s hit superhero drama Heroes won three awards, including best network television series. Children of Men received the award for best science fiction film.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films presented the 33rd Annual Saturn Awards in a ceremony in Universal City, Calif., hosted by Heroes star Greg Grunberg and Jeffrey Ross.

Superman Returns also won awards for best writing (Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty), actor (Brandon Routh) and music (John Ottman).

Heroes also garnered statuettes for two of its stars: Masi Oka (Hiro), for best supporting actor, and Hayden Panettiere (Claire), for best supporting actress.

    Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film: Casino Royale

    Best Animated Film: Cars

    Best International Film: Pan’s Labyrinth

    Best Actor: Brandon Routh (Superman Returns)

    Best Actress: Natalie Portman (V For Vendetta)

    Best Supporting Actor: Ben Affleck (Hollywoodland)

    Best Supporting Actress: Famke Janssen (X-Men: The Last Stand)

    Best Performance by a Younger Actor: Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth)

    Best Director: Bryan Singer (Superman Returns)

    Best Writing: Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris (Superman Returns)

    Best Music: John Ottman (Superman Returns)

    Best Costume: Yee Chung-Man (Curse of the Golden Flower)

    Best Makeup: Todd Masters and Dan Rebert (Slither)

    Best Special Effects: John Knoll, Hal Hickel, Charles Gibson and Allen Hall (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest)

    Best Network Television Series: Heroes

    Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series: Battlestar Galactica

    Best Presentation on Television: The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines

    Best Actor on Television: Michael C. Hall (Dexter)

    Best Actress on Television: Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer)

    Best Supporting Actor on Television: Masi Oka (Heroes)

    Best Supporting Actress on Television: Hayden Panettiere (Heroes)

    Best DVD Release: The Sci Fi Boys

    Best DVD Special Edition Release: Superman II

    Best DVD Classic Film Release: Gojira

    Best DVD Collection: James Bond Ultimate Edition

    Best DVD Television Series: Masters of Horror

    Best Retro Television Series on DVD: Adventures of Superman

Special Awards: Rising Star Award, Matt Dallas (Kyle XY); Filmmakers Showcase Award, James Gunn (Director of Slither); Service Award, Kerry O’Quinn (former publisher of Starlog magazine); Special Recognition Award, “Alien Xmas,” written by Stephen Chiodo and Jim Strain

    Superman Returns was not a good movie. I don’t know, but maybe Supes could actually fight someone in (god forbid) Superman VI?
