Slice of SciFi #81: Interview with “Hellboy Animated” producer Tad Stones

November 1, 2006 By Summer Brooks 5 Comments

Hellboy Animated

News Bytes:

  • Universal Pictures is collaborating with fan production company Energia Productions to bring Star Wreck to DVD
  • Andy Serkis has been helping to write and direct several sections of the new Playstation 3 video game “Heavenly Sword.”
  • Classic Media productions has announced they will be releasing DVD editions of “Mothra vs. Godzilla” and “Godzilla Raids Again,” exclusively online beginning on November 7th.

Movie Talk: Now available on DVD, Natural City was released in Korean theaters in September. It comes from director Byung-Cheon Min, who wanted to take the best elements of “Blade Runner”, “The Terminator” and “The Matrix” and meld them into one great live-action scifi flick. And he did it with such grace and styling that the final product is flawless, rivaling the three films that inspired it.

Movie Review: Joe Russo and Mike Mssey from MoviePulse drop by to discuss The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Disagreement abounds about this film, which keeps things lively.

TV Talk: Marvel Studios is joining up with No Equal Entertainment to develop a live-action TV series based on another of Marvel’s graphic novels series “Moon Knight.”

“Moon Knight” came to the light of day back in the 1970’s and became an immediate hit with the comic book crowd. The story surrounds a soldier of fortune named Marc Spector who has a mysterious encounter with the Egyptian God of Vengeance and the Moon God called Konshu. The result of this joining is superhero Moon Knight, who hunts down criminals and other malcontents by night, bringing swift justice in his wake.

Interview: Hellboy Animated supervising producer and director Tad Stones joins Michael and Summer to talk about Hellboy: Sword of Storms, currently airing on Cartoon Network and scheduled to be released to DVD in February 2007, and the second animated film, Hellboy: Blood and Iron, which is also slated to air later on Cartoon Network.

Future Talk: What’s Coming Up?
Director David Cunningham has taken the reigns and is ready to direct fantasy film “The Dark Is Rising.” This will be the first major film to jump-start the marriage between Walden Media and 20th Century Fox that we talked about back in August.

“The Dark Rising” is just one part of a five-book series by author Susan Cooper. The two mega media companies are hoping to turn Cooper’s books into another blockbuster franchise as they have done with C.S. Lewis’ “Chronicles of Narnia” series of stories.

I enjoyed Ghost In The Shell and the two seasons of the TV series, and for a nice mind trip watch Ghost2 Innocence.

Saw Hellboy Storm of Swords, cool flick. Look forward to seeing the next one and the movie.

Natural City is pretty good, let down a little by slightly confused editing at points. A lot to like about it though.

Moon Knight was an attempt to make a Batman type character for Marvel, he was later re-invented in the 80’s to be a more mystical character. He’s another character like The Falcon that constantly bombs yet Marvel keeps on trying to bring back.

Cowboy BeeBop is also worth the time to watch. I liked it, but was left wanting more out of the story near the end. They seemed to give up some story for action, but left enough in to make it better than Matrix Revolutions. 😉

BeeBop is way cool. There is also BeeBop the movie. It’s nice to know in the future Ramen nooddles are still a mainstay for the monetary challeged.
