Variety reports that Peter Jackson’s King Kong opened well below Universal’s hopes and industry expectations with $9.7 million domestically on Wednesday. That’s about half of the opening day take of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring four years ago, which the studio reportedly said was a comparable film.
I’m not too sure what they were expecting, but let’s look at some reality here.
Number One – it opens in the middle of a week on a school night when its main audience are most probably at home preparing for the next day’s classes.
Number Two – (and this is a biggy), most of the upper north and northeastern part of the United States is either snowed in or iced over, while the south and southeastern States are under a wet deluge and tornado warnings.
Number Three – it’s a well known story about a big gorilla that falls for a bleached blonde. Hell, you can see that for free any night of the week at your local pub.

I don’t know what they were thinking opening this movie on a Wednesday…that was a bad move
