Jeffrey Angles, professor of Japanese at Western Michigan University and award-winning translator of Orikuchi Shinobu’s The Book of the Dead (Minnesota, 2017) and Hiromi Ito’s The Thorn Puller, stops by to talk about his newest translation, Godzilla and Godzilla Raids Again by the late Shigeru Kayama.
These are the novellas that the original Toho Studios Godzilla films were based on, and this book’s publication by University of Minnesota Press is the very first time they are available translated into English.
We talk about how he learned about how popular these stories are in Japan and his surprise at discovering they’d never been translated into English before, what care he took with translating the original story texts, and of course, Gojira, King of the Kaiju.
There’s still an untranslated Godzilla audio drama from before the original movie was released in Japan, as well as a yet-to-be translated novel about Mothra. Let’s hope we get English translations of those, eventually!
Godzilla and Godzilla Raids Again will be published on October 3rd, so order your copy now!
