Reviewing “Suicide Squad”

Reviewing “Suicide Squad”

August 8, 2016 By Daren Gulsvig and Noah Richman 5 Comments

Noah and Daren had high hopes for Suicide Squad, and were prepared to give DC every benefit of the doubt, thinking that maybe since all the characters weren’t as well known outside the comics aficionados that chances would be taken with them and the story.

Alas, their disappointment is epic.

Is that why it’s making so much money?

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made over $400 million. Doesn’t mean it’s a good movie! 🙂

A lot of people hated The Phantom Menace, too, but everyone and their grandmother still went to see it.

I think a lot of the superhero movies suffer from having too much backstory from the comics that only those readers would ever know, and they’re the ones who are the most disappointed. Is DC messing things up by not building better storylines from their comics the way Marvel has been able to do? Only time will tell… right now, Marvel is killing it in the theaters and on Netflix, but DC is killing it with the shows on The CW.

With all due respect to Daren and Noah, I think that they (and pretty much every other critic out there) got this one wrong. Suicide Squad was a good movie. Was it perfect? Of course not. No movie is but Suicide Squad is not deserving of the lambasting it is taking in the press. Many of the poor reviews sound so similar, it almost seems like the fix was in. And they tend to focus on things that a general audience will not care about. I’d advise anyone reading this who may be on the fence about seeing Suicide Squad to ignore this review (and all the others) and go check it out. You’ll be in for a fun time in the theater.

I can add an anecdote. My Army buddy absolutely loved Batman vs Superman… I think he saw it in theaters 4 times. He gushed over how he thought Batman was finally written the way he should have been. The number of people who were loudly disappointed by BvS (or flat out hated it) has been epic. He’s also seen Suicide Squad, and thought it was very good, and we see how fans are reacting.

From the other opinions I’m hearing, I’m seeing a pattern… the comics fans aren’t liking these DC Universe movies, but everyone else who’s not as immersed in the comics are enjoying them. There’s also no real middle ground — people either enjoy them, or hate them.

That’s interesting to me, since it appeared to me the Marvel movies had a broader middle ground.

I’m a comics fan/reader. I’m more steeped in Marvel than DC but I’ve read my share of DC classics (Killing Joke, Kingdom Come, All Star Superman and Dark Knight Returns of course). I’ve actually increased my DC intake in recent years reading the “New 52” Flash and Scott Snyder’s run on Batman. And I love everything DC they are doing on The CW (that includes the new addition of Supergirl) So as a comic fan I can say I’m not finding as much fault with the DC movie stuff as it seems I’m “supposed to”. I liked BvS. Yeah, I think it could have been a bit better but I’ve seen the new Ultimate Edition cut and the extra 30 minutes definitely clears some things up that had people scratching their heads. I think they did the film a disservice by not releasing that cut to theaters. Overall it was definitely a better Batman movie than it was a Superman movie but even if you didn’t like it as a whole, as a Batman fan there was a lot to like about it. I just can’t imagine how a comics fan or just a fan of fun action movies wouldn’t have a good time at Suicide Squad.

When I saw the critical response to Suicide Squad I had a feeling I was going to be in for a good movie. These were after all the same critics who nearly unanimously gave across the board four star reviews to Mad Max: Fury Road, a movie I found to be completely over-hyped, boring garbage.
